Striped Things: A New Reading of the Classic Pattern
We restart the "trend" rubric.where we talk about new trends from the catwalk, which can be adapted for your wardrobe. In this issue we deal with the striped pattern, which today the brands offer to mix with other prints from the cage to the flowers. We also demonstrate how to wear striped clothes in practice.
How it all began
Striped things became fashionable at the beginning of XX century. Of course, thanks to Coco Chanel, who borrowed a sailor's vest from sailors, including it in the women's wardrobe. After a decade, the striped pattern will become popular on the wave of a general fascination with the Art Deco style, which was based on the simplicity of classical lines and geometric shapes. Separately, you can note the striped beach pajamas free cut, popular in the south of France in the mid 30s.
However, the rampage of prints that we see on the catwalks now is primarily associated with fashion at the junction of the 60s and 70s. For example, in 1966, Betsy Johnson applied various printed optical patterns (stripes, diamonds, and circles) to mini-dresses with a straight silhouette. Her work is similar to the latest cruise collection Kenzo. Do not forget about the striped three-piece suit in the men's style, which in 1967 showed Yves Saint-Laurent, and today many interpret: from Karl Lagerfeld to Topshop. Separately, we can mention the passion for the stripes of Jean-Paul Gautier, who for over forty years parodied the French style and included the vests in many shows. Well, he wore it, of course.
How to wear things with stripes now
In the new spring-summer season, the brands equally offer to wear items with a pattern and stripes, and in a cage, and with a floral print. However, the popularity of the cell and the flower print has been gaining momentum since 2013. Curious was not even the return of the strip to the podium, but just its combination with other patterns, with the same cage and colors. It is also interesting how brands combine the most different stripes, different colors, widths and directions. The main thing that we see on the catwalks: in almost all cases, the strip goes in a pair with a strip or other bright prints. So the ability to combine different colors and prints is necessary to enlist.
A variety of stripes in the same image connect J.W. Anderson, Kenzo, Dries Van Noten, Marni, Phoebe English, Jacquemus, MSGM, Opening Ceremony, Proenza Schouler, Stella McCartney and many other brands. Strips adorn and dresses, and blouses, and wide trousers, and polo. Chanel offers a striped trouser suit in men's style. ZDDZ use strips that resemble the enclosing tape. Their Dasha Selyanova puts on bra-tops, bicycles and other summer things. A number of Ukrainian brands also use stripes in things with 70s-style silhouettes. For example, Bevza shows striped microshorts, skirts, decorated with a number of buttons, bodices, dresses. Yasya Minochkina use striped almost elegant metallic fabric.
Beware
Everyone knows archaic tips like "horizontal strip fattening", "vertical - slim". It must be remembered that everything is purely individual. Moreover, as we see in the new collections, the strip can be directed not only horizontally or vertically, but also in any direction at any angle. The safest option in any case will remain a thin, barely noticeable, neat strip on the clothes.
Before you combine a strip with a cage or floral print, you need to think carefully. If you doubt your strength, it’s better to wear striped things with something monotonous - you will not lose. For example, Jacquemus stripes offer a simple white shirt in men's style, white socks and adidas Superstar sneakers with three stripes.
