What is the Scandinavian style in the interior

WE LOVE SCANDINAVIAN STYLE NOT THE FIRST YEAR, and it seems that he is returning to fashion on a par with Italian and French. However, few people have a clear idea of what the phenomenon implies. Last time, Wonderzine talked about why the laconic and comfortable things of Scandinavian designers will never go out of style. This time we understand what is the interior design of the Nordic countries.

It is believed that Scandinavian design originated in the 1950s in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Simplicity, minimalism and functionality - these three principles hold Scandinavian aesthetics, which allows it to remain in demand and relevant in Europe to this day. Modern design school, in fact, adheres to the same rules: design should be simple, accessible and useful.

In 1940, holding neutrality during the Second World War, Sweden entered into a trade agreement with Germany - it almost completely satisfies the Germans need for iron ore. As a result, after the end of the war, Sweden had enough money to strengthen its industrial potential. In addition, the government is beginning to enact laws on social protection of the poor and change the tax system: taxes for poor citizens are reduced, and for the financial elite and the middle class they are rising. There is an idea that beautiful and functional household items should be available not only to the rich segments of the population. At the same time, the Scandinavian style of housing begins to take shape with a democratic and friendly atmosphere for the middle class.

In the 1920s-1930s, Sweden, Norway and Denmark began to produce furniture that combines simplicity and functionality. The works of Scandinavian designers are in the center of world attention during the World Exhibition in New York in 1939. At the same time, the notion of "Swedish modern" appears - a trend whose supporters strive to convey the natural beauty, natural forms, characteristic of the Scandinavian tradition and folk culture in architecture and furniture design. Finnish pavilions at this exhibition are constructed by Alvar Aalto, one of the founders of the modern school of design.

“The task of the architect is to make life more convenient” is perhaps the most famous statement of the Finnish architect. It focuses the main idea of not only Scandinavian design, but also of all modern design in principle. Among the most famous works of Aalto are the Palace "Finland" in Helsinki, the private house of the villa "Mayrea" near the city of Pori and the Church of the Three Crosses in the city of Imatra. All its facilities are united by an almost perfect balance of space and light - these are convenient buildings. The beauty of the facade goes into the background, but in the simplicity of the lines and the play of light lies a special aesthetic pleasure.

Until now, Scandinavian design is different in that it gives priority to functionality, while not allowing the beauty and elegance of things to disappear. It is accessible to all, made by man for man. Scandinavians are proud to create only functional, durable and economical products. Their furniture is very popular and hardly ever will be released in circulation. If people need any product, this product will be sold. If people do not need the product, it will not appear on the Scandinavian market initially.

What is the Scandinavian style in the interior

Minimalism

Natural lines, smooth transitions from one space to another, natural materials, sunlight - from these simple components Scandinavian designers and architects create interactive and living spaces and objects. The Scandinavian style is when “just” does not mean “boring”, which means it is brilliant.

Open, light spaces

In response to long winters and just a few hours of sunshine a day, Scandinavian designers began to create light, open, bright and practical spaces. They try to create at home the maximum comfort and coziness with all the necessary household appliances on hand, so that you can survive the winter without much psychological trauma.

Natural materials

In the Scandinavian countries, where industrialization was a bit late, craft traditions had a great influence. A special place was taken by organic design, which is mostly the style of one material - wood.

Monochrome

Comfort is first and foremost the deliverance of a person from psychological stress. And the easiest way to deal with it is by changing the life situation. In monochrome, there is probably the capacity for permanent change. White, black, gray and other colors typical for Scandinavian design are neutral, they do not put pressure on a person, give him a feeling of freedom.

Functionality

Scandinavian designers have always been in search of the ideal form - functional and possessing internal content, and not some external exoticism. The smoothness of natural lines and strict functionalism are the basic tenets of Scandinavian design, the task of which is to make human life more convenient.
