Hawaiian shirt: How women were allowed into tropical paradise
We tell about the trends from the podium, which can be adapted for your wardrobe for the next six months. Judging by the weather, summer has just begun, which means it’s not too late to pay attention to the brightest prints. Such, which are only on the Hawaiian shirts. In the men's collections, they are much more common than in the women's, but you should not get upset: a free cut and a cheerful design suits absolutely everyone, regardless of gender. We talk about Hawaiian shirts for every taste - and comfort lovers, and fans of rich colors.
How it all began
Oddly enough, Hawaiian shirts appeared on the islands thanks to the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Filipinos. At the end of the 19th century, island enterprises needed cheap labor, which was the migrants from Asia. The Japanese have adapted bright kimonos for work on hot plantations, the Filipinos and the Chinese - barong-tagalog, or the traditional shirt that they wear unbuttoned. Migrants and silks were brought by Hawaiian tailors in the 20th century. Today, the Hawaiian shirt is considered a symbol of the spirit of the islands, their carelessness and good-natured attitude to the world - thanks in large part to prints. In the 1920s, bamboo, tigers and cranes were depicted on clothes as a reminder of the East. Then plots from the islands themselves became popular: palm trees with coconuts, canoes, cutting through waves, huge lobsters and even flying fish. Such shirts were popular not only with locals, but also with tourists. In the 40s, they bought and took bright clothes with them as a reminder of a tropical paradise. So the Hawaiian shirt contributed to the development in other countries of more everyday standards of clothing, and of a relaxed lifestyle in general.
In the 60s, a whole campaign was devoted to this. The local fashion guild was in favor of wearing a Hawaiian shirt as a business suit — after all, it was hot and uncomfortable in coats. To this end, she sent each member of the House of Representatives and the Senate of Hawaii in a bright shirt. Officials adopted a resolution - it was recommended to wear this article of clothing to all men in the summer. Later these shirts began to be worn to work on Fridays: the day of informal clothes was called “Aloha Friday”. And by the 70th, a Hawaiian shirt could be worn to the office any day of the week. Endowed with the spirit of freedom, carelessness and vivid entertainment on the islands, Hawaiian shirts were loved by the heroes of American comedies and action films. In the 90s, cinema gangsters scooped up these colorful clothes. Take Leonardo DiCaprio at least: quite young, in love and insolent, he wore a blue shirt in a red flower in the movie “Romeo + Juliet”. In the image of an extraordinary writer Hunter Thompson, who preferred a discreet brown shirt, Johnny Depp appeared. Christian Slater and Nicolas Cage wore juicy shirts in a large flower. But in the female celebrity fashion, the Hawaiian shirt remained on the periphery for a long time.
How a Hawaiian shirt is back in fashion
Close attention to the Hawaiian shirt designers drew in the 2010s, including them only in the men's collection. For example, in 2013, Prada showed a silk shirt with a long sleeve: thanks to strict gray pants, black sneakers and a simple bag, the image looked laconic and restrained. In 2016, designers presented shirts that girls could include in their wardrobe. Dries Van Noten combined several prints and textures, due to which the shirt turned out to be elegant - it would suit both men's linen pants and women's jeans. The classic blue shirt could be seen in the Saint Laurent collection - Edie Slimane made her a part of the extravagant and so beloved image of the “indie rocker”. We must pay tribute to Prada, who not only included a Hawaiian shirt in the women's collection, but also showed how organically it can look with winter clothes. Under the usual sweater, such a thing does not fit, but it will fit into the image with a heavy leather coat, corset and dark leggings.
What to wear
Hawaiian shirt can be considered a unisex model. If it is not found in the women's departments, you can safely take in the men's. The small size fits perfectly on the shoulders, and the large one can fit into the image as another trendy trend for voluminous things. The main rule is to experiment to the maximum.
Colorful shirt can be combined with the same colorful skirt. So, Cinq à Sept was offered this summer to wear a shirt in a flower with a striped skirt. Kits from Hawaiian shirts and shorts will look good with crop tops and bras. The first is important to choose bright colors, the second - flesh-colored, so as not to overload the image. This combination was proposed by Adam Selman.
An example of how even a bright shirt can look elegant, you can peep at the actress Diana Kruger. She combined a blue shirt, which depicts a real tropical landscape, with a short black skirt and metallic sandals. Similar classic shirts, in the spirit of those that were made at the beginning of the last century, can be found in high-priced brands. For example, the female model Prada - it has an interesting pattern of wildlife among urban buildings. Or the male model of Saint Laurent with cars, surfers and palm trees is a real classic. Among the mass market, Hawaiian shirts offer Zara - not the classical form, but with a truly tropical pattern, and ASOS is a free model that will be relevant for more than one summer.
