The cult comedy "Mean Girls": Style Guide Zero

We pay much attention to trends and modern fashion, but it should be understood that they are only guidelines that each interprets in its own way. The style is shaped, among other things, by the influence of the surrounding reality and culture, including art, films or video clips. From time to time we analyze works from which one can learn a lot of knowledge about the fashion of the epoch and adopt bright style techniques applicable to today. This week we will talk about the film, which is the best example of the mass fashion of the 2000s - “Mean Girls”, an extraordinary comedy about girl feud and friendship, going hand in hand.

Released in 2004, he received unexpected success for everyone at the box office, exceeding his own budget several times. The film script was written by the comedian Tina Fey and played the role of an understanding math teacher in it. Her script, by the way, was based on a self-help book to help adolescents and their parents with the beautiful and comprehensive title "Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and the New Realities of Girl World". As a result, this film is about school hierarchies, gossip, meanness from a small mind and teenage complexes due to the talent of the screenwriter as much as possible stands out from a number of similar youth comedies that came out one by one at that time. But most importantly, this film about 15-year-olds perfectly illustrates the spirit of the times and the fashion of the 2000s.

The appearance of the heroines - their clothes, makeup, hair - emphasizes character traits and relationships with the world and others. Watching now on fashionable things of 2004 is at least ridiculous: “Mean girls” with their pink plush costumes and nouveau riche chic can be represented as an endless stream of memes about excess. We have already written about the slow return of the fashion of the 2000s and explained that elements of the time in the modern context are borrowed delicately and accurately. In order to refresh our memory, we decided to make an excursion into the world of the 2000s with the help of the film and recall 10 characteristic features that we suggest repeating only with great caution.

Camouflage

A coarse khaki or camouflaged jacket was considered a thing for all ages. She was worn with light dresses and jeans on her hips - in fact, like the heroine Lindsay Lohan.

School style

T-shirt, striped knee-highs, flared skirt - the image of Avril Lavigne influenced the minds and hearts of adolescents as well as reality stars and pop stars. The wet black hair and wet-effect hairs on Lizzy Kaplan's heroine look ridiculous in the film. But black arrows and graphic lines with the help of eyeliner is one of the main and obvious beauty trends of winter. Just do not slip into maximalism.

Lip gloss

Lip gloss even on the screen looks too sticky and noticeable. It is unlikely that the flesh of MAC will ever be as popular as in the 2000s. But it is to be expected that after the dominance of matte lipsticks everyone will want to return to the “wet” textures again.

Layering

In the 2000s, magazines liked to write that cuffs that look out from under a knitted top and a large shirt collar (preferably striped) make the image more interesting. Pure Evil, and the most popular girl in school, Regina George is a clear fan of gloss.

Hypersize

Now a huge pink polo Lacoste, which turned out to be on the main character by chance, seems to be the most fashionable thing in the whole film. Hypersize at its best.

Velour suit

Regina’s “unusual”, “cool” mother is another prominent character in the film who wears the same thing as her daughter, for example, a velor costume with a bulky gemstone decoration. What now seems doubtful, then it seemed obviously true. Costume was considered for centuries - and in the feast, and in the world.

Tartan

The checkered miniskirts as a legacy from the 90s can be seen in the film on all the heroines, from the girls of Regina George's retinue to minor characters. The Scottish cell returns almost every season. In the 2000s, it was possible to buy it in any mass market.

Pink

"On Wednesdays - pink," - explains the rules of the style of the heroine Lindsay Lohan her new "girlfriend." If now designers are increasingly offering to wear the pink male half of humanity, then fifteen years ago it was assumed that this was more girlish prerogative. Pink can rightly be called the main color of the 2000s.

Bag with logos

A small handbag with monograms and a strap of the same material and color are faithful companions of the main character. Exactly the same could be seen on the R'n'B-singers from the zero clips.

Rhinestones

Glitters with which every second T-shirt and jeans were covered in this era were also sculpted on the face and body - as tattoos. Cult moment: the heroine Amanda Saifrid molds for the graduation on the chest the first letter of her name, but by stupidity - in a mirror image.
