Thirty-two-year-old art director Matthew Holroyd from London today is the founder of two publications: the satirical fashion magazine Vague Paper and the independent porn magazine Baron. He was born in Frankfurt, but later moved to London, graduated from Middlesex University, and after Camberwell College of Arts. Before becoming an art director, Holroyd was a stylist for some time and worked under Isabella Blow. “When I was 24, I got an internship with Isabella Blow. It was an unforgettable experience. Blow encouraged my enthusiasm, and it was she who pushed me to create my own independent project,” says Holroyd.
In 2006, 25-year-old Matthew Holroyd launches a samizdat alternative magazine - Vague Paper. “I wanted to make a magazine where I could work with representatives of the creative class and create stories that would be critical to fashion,” says the art director in an interview with Business of Fashion. Thus, minor children appear on the covers of his publication, and among the shootings there is a parody of the young Yves Saint Laurent. Not surprisingly, Opening Ceremony calls the Vague Paper the "evil twin of Vogue." Matthew Holroyd himself says that he is positioning his first magazine as a "satirical publication on fashion and art." Matthew Holroyd’s latest project is Baron’s small porn magazine, which is sold at Colette and Marc Jacobs boutiques. The creative director of the magazine says: "Baron is a publication in which sex is revealed through a photo." Perhaps, the latest publishing project of Holroyd is more about art, and it’s served somehow at ease. Thus, the introduction to Baron begins with the words: "Erotic magazine in soft binding for gentlemen and ladies, whose lifestyle is described by cocktail parties, beautiful clothes and talk about modern art. Magazine for those who are not averse to dragging their boyfriend to bed when he goes out light and end gin. " |
On this summary Matthew Holroyd is not over. London-based Hostem boutique, which sells Ann Demeulemeester, CDG and Rick Owens, launched its own magazine and invited the guy to the post of editor-in-chief. The publication is published once a year, and each issue is named by different male names - for example, Hector and Sebastian. He also worked on the cover of the latest album of the British rock band Suede and developed a line of T-shirts for the Selfridges department store. "There are a huge number of approaches and principles in art directorship. |
Personally, I thought beyond the usual understanding of fashion. People considered my approach to work as avant-garde, and this created some difficulties in understanding. Therefore, I had to fight and prove to them that only such a path is advanced, ”says Matthew. - I started out as a stylist, but then I realized that being in this work was rather tight for me. So I decided to engage in projects as an art director. And it worked. " |
