Photoprints and perforation on Steven Tai clothes
IN THE WEEKLY RUBRIC "NEW MARK" Wonderzine presents young designers and tells where and how you can buy their things. Our hero this week is Stephen Ty, a Canadian who lives in London and receives compliments from Susie Bubble and Style.com.
Stephen Ty calls himself a nerd: at school he even attended a class to create books manually. Looking at the collections of the 29-year-old Canadian, you see that work and thought have been invested in them. For example, in the spring-summer season, the designer uses a lot of perforated fabrics, which combines with photographic prints and gradient coloring. It turns out wide shirts with 3/4 sleeves, skirts on the floor with slits on the sides, which need to be combined with deliberately wide trousers, and dresses with images of summer landscapes. Ty says that he likes the image of a tomboy, so he advises him to wear clothes with hats and creepers.
Stephen Ty graduated from Central Saint Martins three years ago and took part in the famous festival in Hyères. There he was lucky: the designer received a grant of 15,000 euros and decided to open his own brand. He was noticed by Berlin Fashion Week and the important New York project VFiles, where Ty showed his collections, and interviewed the designer with the editions Business of Fashion and New York Magazine. Critics praise him for a thorough choice of materials, which is quite expected: fabrics are what Tai is doing. He likes to make his own materials, for example, for the next season, FW-2014, he ordered the production of fabric for coats with a lot of medium-sized fringe and flowers in France. Recently, Tai presented the autumn-winter collection at the London Fashion Week. After the end of the season of its sales, the designer plans to have a big dinner for those who helped him.
I did not want to become a designer, but I grew up in a garment factory. In Vancouver, I studied economics and realized that I wanted to do something more creative. My friend then filed documents in Central Saint Martins, and I decided to do it for company with him. I did a lot of internships: at Hussein Chalayan, Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf - and they were all very useful, because I learned a lot of new things not only about sewing, but also how companies are organized. But, working in Bless, I understood how independent projects function. All this knowledge was useful to me when I opened my own business. I think girls need to treat clothes with more irony and choose innovative clothes. Now in the fashion industry there are so many technologies that not using them will be a huge omission.
