Placement: 15 major hashtags of the year on rights and dignity

Global campaigns increasingly begin in social networks - it is enough to recall the movement #MeToo or the post-Soviet, which thundered a year earlier # ЯНЕ I Am AfraidTe Say. We decided to recall the loudest hashtags of 2018, and at the same time understand what topics worried the users of social networks in Russia and the world in the outgoing year most of all.

#MarchForOurLives

In the spring, the United States march for our lives was held, calling for stricter control over arms trafficking in the country. The march was organized by pupils at a school in Parkland, Florida, where seventeen schoolchildren died because of a massive shelling - and the actions themselves took place in hundreds of points throughout the country. #MarchForOurLives has become one of the most popular socially significant hashtags on Instagram.

The fact that the movement against the proliferation of weapons has gained particular popularity in the United States is not surprising: it is easier to acquire here than in many other countries. Nevertheless, it would be wrong to limit the conversation to the United States alone - in Russia this year there were also many reasons to discuss the massacres: how the press covers them and what needs to be done to prevent them.

# Killed by Gossip

In November, the Civil Initiative project released a report on honor killings - reprisals against women and girls because of the misconduct they allegedly committed, violating traditions and customary patterns of behavior. Human rights activists counted 39 similar murders that occurred in the North Caucasus from 2008 to 2017, but, according to experts, this is only a small part of what is actually happening.

Unfortunately, this is not the only reason this year to talk about mass violations of women's rights in Russia. In the summer, "Civil Initiative" released a report on female genital mutilation in the republics of the North Caucasus - and in the autumn it turned out that they were also being conducted in Moscow.

#freethepimple

We have long urged to abandon the idea that the exterior may have "flaws" - and rejoice that this approach is becoming increasingly popular. This summer, the finalist of "Britain's Next Top Model" Louise Nortkot came up with the tag #freethepimple: it urges people to honestly talk about acne and the difficulties of accepting themselves, not be shy and not be ashamed of the features of their skin.

#places everywhere

This flash mob came up with sex enlightener Tatiana Nikonov. She was inspired by the South African advertising campaign "PPS For Professionals", which played up stereotypes about women - for example, such: "She needs only your money, because she is an accountant." Tatiana also took a selfie, accompanying him with her own replica and tag # of the place to the whole. The idea was picked up by other users of social networks, and the result was a huge gallery of professions, proving that women can be anything they want.

This is not to inspire

In January, student Tatyana Strakhova was brutally murdered in Moscow. Student MSTU. N. E. Bauman Artyom Iskhakov, whose neighbor she was, published a letter in social networks where he said that he had killed her, and then raped and committed suicide. While some users of social networks sympathized with the girl, others, paradoxically, began to condemn her because she drank alcohol and published photos in social networks in lingerie. The response to victimization was the action #to not inspire - its participants said that no appearance and lifestyle of the victim can justify the monstrous violence against the girl.

# yan basketball player

This hashtag unwittingly helped launch our editorial board: in the spring we released a material in which several heroines told how their height is affected by high growth. Model, blogger and TV presenter Maria Minogarova, to whom this topic was close, launched a flashmob #yane basketball player - under this tag social network users talked about the difficulties that they face because of their growth. At the same time, not only tall women, but also women with small stature took part in it.

#DGlovesChina

In November, Dolce & Gabbana launched the campaign "DG Loves China" ("DG loves China"), timed to coincide with the show of the brand in Shanghai. It includes several clips in which the Chinese model tries to eat traditional Italian dishes - pizza, pasta and cannoli - with chopsticks, but copes with difficulty. Users of social networks immediately accused the brand of racism, and after that, screenshots of correspondence by Stefano Gabbana, a well-known politically incorrect statement, appeared on the Web, who himself accused the Chinese of racism because of "eating dogs." Representatives of the brand were quick to announce that the accounts of Dolce & Gabbana and Stefano Gabbana were hacked, but the situation could not be stopped - celebrities and models invited to it began to refuse to participate in the show, so that the show was canceled altogether. How these events will affect the future fate of the brand, we learn in 2019.

# feminism extremism

The year 2018 in Russia will be remembered for numerous cases "for repost," instituted because of "extremist" publications in social networks under Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. In September, a similar case was brought against the radical feminists, Lyubov Kalugina, who was accused of "inciting hatred towards men." In response, social network users launched a flash mob # feminism-non-extremism, calling for attention to be paid not to Kalugina posts, but to the problem of violence against women in Russia.

#ThisIsNotConsent

In November in Ireland, a court acquitted a twenty-seven year old man who was accused of raping a seventeen-year-old girl. The court considered that since the girl had “erotic underwear,” she was preparing for sex, that is, there could be no rape - only consent sex. In response, Irish activists launched the #ThisIsNotConsent (#ThisConclusion) campaign against victimization, in which they published underwear photos.

#squatforchange

This hashtag was launched by the father of three children, Donte Palmer. In the fall, he went with his family to a restaurant - he needed to change the diaper to his youngest son, but there was no changing table in the men's room. "Why are there no changing tables in men's toilets? As if we do not exist!" - he wrote. #squatforchange calls to pay attention to fathers who raise children, and on the topic of equal parenthood: the hashtag in translation means "squat down to change the diaper." Palmer was supported by other men.

#PadManChallenge

This flash mob against stigma monthly launched at the beginning of the year. It is timed to the release of the film "Padman", telling about the Tamil inventor Arunachale Muruganantam. He found a way to reduce the cost of production of gaskets, which in India still can not afford all (this is especially important, given the extent to which the subject of menstruation is still stigmatized in the country). As part of #PadManChallenge, users posted their own photos with a lining in their hand - Natalya Vodyanova, for example, took part in the action.

#inmyfeelingschallenge

The main dance challenge of the year according to Instagram. The flash mob is inspired by Drake's song "In my Feelings" - social network users posted short videos in which they go and dance to a specific fragment of the song (some, however, were dangerous - the filming often took place on the roadway, next to the moving car). A variety of celebrities took part in the flash mob, and Drake himself, who released the video "In my Feelings", closed it.

#WhyIdidntReport

One of the most high-profile political processes of the outgoing year is the Senate hearings on the case of Judge Brett Cavanaugh in the United States, whom Donald Trump nominated for the post in the Supreme Court. Three women accused Kavano of sexual abuse - they all talked about situations that occurred in the early eighties. And although the hearings did not talk about criminal prosecution (only about whether such a person can hold a post in the Supreme Court), accusations against Kavano caused outrage of critics and a discussion about why women spoke about violence only after many years.

The reason for the flash mob was given by Donald Trump himself, who tweeted that if Kavano’s actions were really so serious, the victims would immediately turn to the police. Under the hashtag #WhyIDidntReport, thousands of women spoke about their experiences of violence and harassment and why they did not go to the police. Many did not listen, others were afraid of condemnation or felt guilty, third, when they confessed everything, did not believe their relatives or the police themselves.

In October, Brett Cavanaugh did get a position in the Supreme Court.

#YANe talkedYes

Project # YANeGovorila Yes launched the Kyrgyz edition of Kloop, publishing the stories of several women who were married without their consent. During the rite of ala kachuu, girls were brought into the house and forced to get kosho for the white wedding curtain: it is believed that if a woman stepped behind him, she agrees to marry. If a woman resists, they can rape her so that she cannot leave the house out of a sense of shame.

# Prostheses on Will

This tag did not appear in 2018, but in the summer blogger Sammy Jabrail drew attention to it. Last year, Jabrail lost a leg in a car accident, and in the summer she was given a prosthesis. "Striking emotions. It turns out that I am a cyborg girl? Now I remind myself of a doll. So that more people know about me, and this, respectively, entailed the freedom of people with disabilities, I suggest launching a flashmob: PROTESONALIZE", she wrote .

#ZoomChallenge

Fun flash mob with not the most fun consequences. #ZoomChallenge originated from the track Lil Yachty "Mickey". It looks like this: on the word "Zoom!" people sitting on the floor sharply pull out of the frame by the legs. And all would be nothing, but sometimes it happens so quickly and unexpectedly that a person with all his strength beats his head on the floor, and this, in turn, can lead to injury. So we do not recommend repeating it on holidays.

#SurvivorsAgainstSESTA

In the spring, Donald Trump signed FOSTA-SESTA (Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act and Stop Sex Traffickers Act), which is designed to combat sex work and Internet traffic. Sites will penalize the promotion of sex trafficking; for example, it is the responsibility to declare sex work. At first, it was only about specialized sites, but then the provisions were extended to all sites as a whole. As a result, many media and social networks began to act preemptively and delete content that can be considered illegal - this, presumably, could be associated with changes in Instagram and Facebook policies, due to which not only illegal content was threatened, but also completely legitimate. sex education blogs.

In addition, FOSTA-SESTA, which is supposed to save people involved in the sex business, criticized sex workers. They believe that the package of laws will hit, first of all, not by the organizers of trafficking, but by the sex workers themselves, who will be forced to look for clients not online (where they can be checked and secure themselves), but on the streets. They organized the #SurvivorsAgainstSESTA movement - the campaign continued until the end of June.
