Clothing designer Katya Yayamurd in her studio
Rubric "ROOM" dedicated to the place in which a person spends most of his time. It can be absolutely any space: a huge kitchen in which the hero works and rests, an art gallery that has become the second home of its owner, or just a living room in a one-room apartment, which is at the same time an office, a bedroom and a secret place. The space in which a person is able to concentrate on himself and his affairs and not feel himself a participant in the eternal race of a big city. In our new issue - fashion designer Katya Yayemurd and her studio in the artist's house on Vavilova Street.
I always liked the area between the "Trade Union" and "University". It is calm here, and I rest from the center - besides, everything you need is near. In the summer it's great to skate, because the asphalt is smooth everywhere. A market with really tasty food across the street from the house is also a great advantage. I lived in this place ten years ago, when I first came to work in Moscow. Then I studied and worked in Spain for several years, and when I came back, I began to look for apartments here. At first, it did not work out: I began to rent a room in the center and a studio at the Electrozavod. In August, I urgently needed to move: it turned out that my friend was rethinking the room in the artist's house. We immediately agreed, and a month later I moved. So I managed to combine the workspace and the living room - it is very convenient. Why, there - I always dreamed of this.
About the house
Home to me is a place of power where I can restore my own order; the place where I am most pleasant. So it turned out that several neighbors are my good friends. This is an accident, but I'm glad she is. I like to receive guests: all friends are delighted with this studio. A couple of times we organized large-scale film screenings with a projector. There were no parties here yet, but they are planned. I didn’t change much when moving, unless I moved the furniture, added another table and hung the curtains. Large windows, of course, are a major plus. There is a lot of space, and it is convenient that there is a mezzanine.
It happens that I have to keep rolls of fabrics until they go into production, so I need a large amount of free space. To make everything truly perfect, you need to completely redo some of the things, and restore something - there was no repair from Soviet times. If I decide to stay here for a long time, I will definitely do it. Maybe I just painted everything all over again in white. I would also like to add a large mirror and carpet. And since I haven't bought anything from furniture for a long time - the necessary basic things from IKEA are not considered. The cluttered space is my worst nightmare, I try not to save things. I love little things, but I never get them. The only thing I always move with my favorite books. So the rule "do little" is, perhaps, about me.
About combining space
The studio has both the rest and the work equally. I have to negotiate with myself all the time: for example, in the week I don’t lower my hammock. When I have time, I sew myself, mostly dresses for my girlfriends, and also work out new models and details. I used to have more time for this, now I can devote it to a day or two a week. I sincerely rejoice if friends, colleagues, familiar designers or just those for whom clothing design is a hobby come to visit me and sew along with me. Not so boring and great motivates.
