Windbreaker: Home Autumn Outerwear

We tell about the trends from the podium, which can be adapted for your wardrobe for the next six months. In the late 1980s and 1990s, they promptly burst into fashion and are not going to leave. We have already talked about neon, massive sneakers, narrow glasses, baseball caps and other trendy attributes of the past decades - it's time to talk about windbreakers that we liked so much in childhood and who are no less pleased to wear celebrities from Shayi Labaaf to Kim Kardashian.

How it all began

As the name implies, the primary task of the windbreaker is weather protection. We can assume that, at least in part, the windbreaker was born thanks to the sailors: they needed clothes that would not let the sea spray and the piercing wind. Such "raincoats" were made of thick sailing fabric soaked in resin - the main drawback of such jackets was that, wetting them, they became very heavy, and also did not let the air out at all, so the skin under them did not breathe. However, with the development of technology, the materials have changed: special outerwear has become much lighter, without losing its protective properties. Now it is accepted to call a windbreaker weightless jackets that will save not so much from the pouring rain and severe waves, as from temperature drops and wind.

According to one of the popular versions, windbreakers in the form in which we know them now were born in 1965 thanks to the French company K-Way and its founder Leon-Claude Duhamel. According to the memoirs of Duhamel, the idea of demi-season outerwear came to him when he looked at the soaked Parisians, sitting in a cafe. The result was a nylon jacket weighing 40 grams, placed in a small bag that you could carry with you in a bag in case of bad weather - a real revolution of that era.

The name of the brand came up with the agency Havas (at first Duhamel wanted to name the brand Encas - “Just in case”) - in their opinion, K-Way would have sounded American and would attract more buyers. The company's forecasts came true: after the launch, the brand sold about 250,000 windbreakers and gained popularity far beyond the borders of France. Today, K-Way is still producing multi-colored jackets, as well as raincoats, vests and even swimsuits, and on their account collaborations with Marc Jacobs, Ami, Maje and other popular brands.

Another legendary windbreaker Windrunner came up with the sports brand Nike in the late 1970s. Light jacket was developed specifically for runners - so that they could train in any weather in unrestricted movement of clothing. In the 1980s, athletes wore a windrunner windbreaker at major competitions, and in the 1990s they were already worn outside the stadiums. Thanks to the cheerful acid shades, she was firmly entrenched among the other iconic attributes of that era - it’s enough to revise the cult television show with Will Smith "The Prince of Beverly Hills" (a real style guide for fans of the 90s).

Why windbreakers are back in fashion

The comeback of windbreakers in the light of the return to the fashion of the same neon, “ugly” colors and shapes and the so-called father's style as a whole (a good example of this is Shia Labaf) has become more than logical. In recent seasons, lightweight nylon jackets can be seen at the shows of Maison Margiela, Stella McCartney, Versace and Balenciaga, as well as in the collections of Kenzo, Opening Ceremony, Prada, Rick Owens, Moncler and many other brands.

Following the designers, windbreakers began to take over and popular girls like Bella Hadid and Gigi, Kendall Jenner, Kaiya Gerber and Malia Obama. Trend did not bypass Kim Kardashian: she not only wears windbreakers for a couple with her daughter North West, but also promotes them in the campaign of Wardrobe.NYC - marks of her stylist and fashion director of Vogue Australia Christine Centenery, who included a jacket in a set of ten items basic wardrobe. In general, windbreakers are not going anywhere to go, which we are very pleased with - especially with the approaching unpredictable off-season.

What to wear

In 2018, it is obvious that windbreakers are perfectly combined with everything: they can be combined with basic things like jeans and T-shirts, but they will look no less impressive with flying dresses in underwear style or even instead of them - for example, Rihanna does. This demi-season thing perfectly replaces the usual jacket or bomber jacket, and even the top.

Windbreaker can be entered in the evening wardrobe, as Lady Gaga does, or combine it with a dress in sequins, as at the Valentino show (which is especially important given the changeable autumn weather). Beautiful windbreaker will look with minimalistic long skirts and ankle boots - in this form they showed the brand Céline. Excellent proof that sport and fashion are the key trends of modernity that can get along in one outfit.

No less appropriate windbreakers will look with mini skirts and near-sports shorts. The most trendy option is to mix three trends of recent seasons at once: windbreaker, bicycles and neon - as in the Fenty x Puma show. So it all depends on your style and imagination.
