Sand Dune: Laconic Textiles
Wonderzine presents young designers and tells, where and how you can buy their stuff. Our heroine this week is Dasha Filatova, the founder of the young British brand Sand Dune, which produces minimalist everyday clothes made of linen and cotton.
Dasha Filatova, the creator of Sand Dune, worked for several years at the Condé Nast publishing house as a fashion editor and in a multi-brand store where she held the position of art director. For the past eight years, she has also worked as a stylist in parallel - both for magazines and for commercial video and advertising. Half a year ago, Dasha decided to enroll at the University of the Arts London, but in order to pass a competitive interview, she needed to submit a creative work: to implement them. So my capsule collection was included in my portfolio and became the first collection of my own brand. "
Since the circulation of things is still small, Dasha does not order fabrics from factories, but collaborates with companies that provide materials for small parties from Europe and Asia with an additional commission. The girl admits that it’s convenient at the initial stage to work with such companies, since you don’t have to spend the budget for the purchase of large footage of fabric, which in the end will be used only by half or even a third. By education, Dasha is a tailor-tailor, which, of course, helps a lot in work. So, she can explain in great detail to the team what she wants in the final result - right up to the treatment of all the seams.
"It seems to me that this gives a great advantage - we spend a little time on corrections and corrections." There are always a lot of difficulties if you want to create something from scratch - the path from the idea to the final product is not as short as it seems, but you have to participate in all stages of the process: in the end, it was completed at least 70 percent of what was intended. "
The pricing policy for the young brand is an important question: "If I understand that the thing will cost more than the initial estimate, I would rather give up this thing and will not launch it into production." At the same time, in the opinion of the girl, high-quality things cannot and should not be cheap. Very soon, an online store will be launched on the website sand-dune.com. Also, according to Dashi, negotiations are underway with several Moscow and American multi-brands, and, perhaps, in April Sand Dune items can be bought in stores. The girl is planning to build the whole workflow now so that she can combine it with her studies at UAL - without prejudice to both. Next season, Dasha plans to expand the range of products and points of sale in America and Europe in order to make things more accessible to the potential audience.
I love minimalism, I like well-designed, beautiful and high-quality things and I love colors very much. The way colors blend together is a really interesting moment for me. I spend a lot of time studying this issue from the philosophical and psychological sides and try to apply it in my works. For example, for the summer collection I used "burned" or "burnt out" colors to convey the atmosphere of the desert and the sensation of a scorching sun.
