Big Bang Perfumery: The Best Cosmos Flavors
Text: Ksenia Golovanova, author of the telegram channel Nose Republic
Despite the fact that pop culture is increasingly inclined toin order to represent space as an empty and cold place, one can fantasize about it quite differently. This distant and abstract topic for earthlings turns out to be an excellent tool for research in the field of odors. In honor of Cosmonautics Day, our perfume critic Ksenia Golovanova talks about the best fragrances inspired by rockets, nebulae, and travels to the stars.
Equation, Fueguia 1833
18 000 rubles in the SVMoscow boutique
The strangest flavor in this review, Equation, is devoted to the so-called Tsiolkovsky formula, which determines the maximum speed of a rocket outside the atmosphere and the Earth. This is a real niche, what it was twenty years ago, at the best of times. Comme des Garçons: Equation smells of smoke, stinging, starting gases and red-hot rocket skin. There is a touching floral tenderness in this reactionary child - a reminder of a fragile person hidden in protective layers of metal in the middle of a gaping void.
Alien Eau Sublime, Mugler
about 5,200 rubles in "Riv Gosh" (sales start - May-2017)
For the first time, Mugler discovered alien life in 2005: then it smelled strongly of jasmine and cashmere, a substance whose smell the earth's nose defines as something between a tree, musk and vanilla. Since then, the ranks of aliens who have moved to Earth thanks to the French company have replenished thoroughly: Mugler regularly releases Alien flankers, and everyone is good - not an invasion, as Guerlain did with their senseless and merciless La Petite Robe Noire, but a peaceful intergalactic procession. Very good and the last "Alien", Alien Eau Sublime is a green man with a jasmine heart and a well-ventilated citrus head, cheerful and jumping in conditions of earth's gravity.
Supernova Roads
12 800 rubles
A supernova is a powerful explosion that occurs when it exhausts its fuel reserves, or, as astrophysics put it, a massive star dies. In the course of this cataclysm, it abruptly changes its brightness by several orders of magnitude, and after a long time it fades out - its posthumous radiation we observe after the fact. If you are lucky, this is a truly rare phenomenon on the scale of human life. Supernova is also a rarity in its own way: first, when was the last time you met a perfume brand from Ireland? Secondly, these are really bright, dazzling citruses: icy lime, bitter petigrein and sour grapefruit on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Red hoba, xerjoff
28 800 rubles
Goba is the largest meteorite found: it weighs over sixty tons, and its diameter is about three meters. On the territory of modern Namibia, he allegedly fell eighty thousand years ago, but discovered it relatively recently: in 1920, the owner of the Goba-West farm plowed a field and came across a huge piece of iron. From it the meteorite consists approximately on 84% and it is considered the biggest nugget of this metal found on the Earth. The red hue of Goba Cecile Zarokian translates into the perfumery language very literally - with the help of fiery cinnamon and thick, almost impenetrable smoke, in which the irises and jasmine are choking. You will also suffocate - at least for the first half hour, until the shroud subsides, revealing a new landscape: smoldering earth and scalded flowers.
Nebula 1: Orion, Oliver & Co.
€140
Oliver Valverde’s “Nebul” is just two. The third one is on the way, but the first issue dedicated to the Orion Nebula, the perfumer thinks to withdraw from production: complicated, does not use demand, the buyer bypasses. The idea is brilliant: the great Orion Nebula, located in the same constellation, is the closest place to Earth for the active formation of new stars, huge “creches” in which newborn stars burn and cool clouds of cosmic dust swirl. The first Nebula brilliantly reproduces this contrast of temperatures and the collision of multidirectional forces: the flowers melt in the hot metal, the anisic ice sizzles, the styly incense creeps over the heated rubber.
Moon Dust, MiN New York
16 600 rubles
MiN New York started with cosmetics for hair, but quickly got carried away with the aromatic properties of foams and gels and made a perfume line. Frankly speaking, it costs more than it should have been asked for: all these Dahabs, Longboards, and Roads in the Dunes are rather simple and unpretentious, albeit charming, as a way of life that they idealize. There is, of course, in this collection of summer cards and its night sky - Moon Dust ("Moon dust"). And this aroma is quite serious: it smells of gunpowder, burnt rubber and saltpeter, in a word - moon soil, as described by the members of the Apollo expeditions.
