Eyebrows: Why Rihanna's makeup on the cover of Vogue is a victory

This week Rihanna appeared on the cover of the British Vogue. He photographed the singer Nick Knight, a celebrity hairdresser and permanent master Rihanna Youssef constructed a hair-colored design, and Isamaya Ffrench was responsible for the makeup. One of her names in this series is enough to imagine what kind of cover it is. Nevertheless, we explain why eyebrows, strings and other avant-garde on the cover of the advanced gloss is a joyful event.

Where did the "strings" come from

The “classic” make-up version with thin eyebrows painted history already knows - this is Pat McGrath's makeup for the 2007 Dior show. In recent years, thin eyebrows in different versions reappear in the podium makeup: here, for example, Hussein Chalayan draws black “strings” over the translucent eyebrows of models, but an elegant version with a stroke at Prada. That is, the reception is not new and not even the most shocking of the avant-garde. Models in some shows are generally without eyebrows, with "spider" eyes, plastic makeup, his own head under his arm - in general, it can be bolder. But the appearance of such makeup on the cover of Vogue brings eyebrows in a slightly different context.

The September fashion edition is dedicated to a simple message: be yourself. New versions of Vogue from different countries have been emerging for a long time: Ukrainian explores national identity, American seeks to be in touch with reality, including political. And almost all depart from the classic beauty of a magazine - a very correct movement at a time when celebrities rebel against excessive retouching, and fashion does not disown ideology. Rihanna, who in recent years has turned into an absolute style icon, has created an inclusive cosmetics brand and a line of modern clothes, is the ideal heroine of 2018. The singer, among other things, is known for her experiments with make-up and the ability to draw bold techniques into massive trends. It is not surprising that avant-garde eyebrows made by Isamayi Ffrench, who replaced wide, thick eyebrows on the cover, did not go out of fashion, caused so much attention.

Why is it cool

Of course, the best publications have always published experimental photos on their pages at the intersection of fashion and art, but the cover has a special status - it should attract attention. Avant-garde make-up accompanied the same non-mass fashion, unexpected solutions to this day and settle in the podiums and in instagrama lovers of non-standard exercises. Rihanna with a face framed in flowers and painted eyebrows looks like an alien or a work of art, the image seems to be specially made to distract from the standards of beauty - and this is surprisingly modern. New influenzaers do not appear before us in the form of a transcendental ideal that cannot be achieved, but are inspired: it seems that this is part of a healthy picture of the world.

How can this be repeated

Most likely, Isamayi Ffrench’s hands didn’t do without plastic makeup, but if you want to try something like this without resorting to such efforts, experiment with your own eyebrows (just be careful with plucking) and sturdy pencils and linens. If the eyebrows are light and spongy, lay them well with gel and draw thin lines directly on top; the radical option is to shave or discolor the eyebrows (in good performance it doesn’t look as strange as you can imagine, but increases the scope for imagination by several times). If your own eyebrows are rather dark and you don’t want to modify them, try repeating the Prada version. Do not forget about the different colors and glitter, if you do not like black and dark liners.
