How to combine family and career: Board presenter Katie Couric
ABOUT TIPS ABOUT HOW TO BUILD A CAREER AND SUCCESS in the professional field, easy to get lost. In our section, we offer to focus on the advice of famous people and explain why they should listen. In the new issue, we turned to the recommendations of the American TV presenter Katie Couric and reason why we should pay attention to her.
Mothers often feel guilty about the fact that, combining both cases, they cannot devote themselves to either of them completely
TV presenter Katie Couric is now working with Yahoo !, and before that she managed to work as an ABC News presenter, had her own Katie talk show on ABC, and was also the host of the CBS evening news show and the NBC Today Show. Katy had to combine journalistic work with raising children: Kurik had two daughters, 25-year-old Ally and 20-year-old Carrie. In last year's interview with Business Insider, she gave working mothers advice on how to combine career and family. “Get rid of the feeling of guilt. When you are somewhere, do not reproach yourself for not being at work now, and when you're at work, don't reproach yourself for not being at home,” she said. “You need prioritize. And when something important happens and you need to be present, don't apologize for it. " She also says that she appreciates the workers who help her keep an eye on the house, and believes that it is very important to provide them with adequate remuneration.
The question of the balance of family life and career still remains for women one of the most difficult: the Soviet tradition, often cited as an example of equal opportunities for women, in fact charged them with the responsibility of taking care of their children, and keeping an eye on the house, and working with men. Mothers often feel guilty about the fact that, combining both cases, they can not devote themselves to any of them completely. Public opinion also influences how we set priorities and make choices: according to the VTsIOM survey, the majority of Russians believe that when choosing between family and career, a woman should give preference to a family - only 20% of respondents would advise a woman to focus on work.
At the same time, research data suggests that mothers who managed to find a balance are a good role model: a study conducted by scientists at Harvard University last year showed that the example of a working mother is useful for children, especially for girls. Using data on residents of 24 countries, scientists found out that girls whose mothers not only were engaged in raising children and doing housework, but also built a career, achieved great success in work, received higher salaries and built more equal relations with partners. The sons of working mothers, according to the study, took more participation in raising children.
At the same time, speaking of balance, it is important to take into account how your relationship is built with a partner (is he ready to share responsibilities equally so that you both can combine work and family affairs?) - without this, it is impossible to talk about full equality. Well, if your income, lifestyle and beliefs allow you to use the services of babysitters and wives and shift part of your daily duties to them, for which you do not have enough time, do not feel guilty for this feeling.
