Sculptural dresses with perforation Atelier Kikala
In the weekly heading "New Brand" Wonderzine presents young designers and tells where and how you can buy their things. Our hero this week is Lado Bokuchava and his brand Atelier Kikala from Georgia.
We talked about the wave of Ukrainian designers - Lila Litkovskaya, Costa Omele, Svetlana Bevze. Soon the young guys from Georgia will be discussing no less actively. The country's fashion will be recognized through the Art Georgia exhibition in Paris and the Benext competition in Tbilisi. One of the first young Georgian designers is to remember Lado Bokuchavu, who is responsible for the Atelier Kikala brand. His horse is leather clothing. He creates coats, tops and perforated skirts that are inspired by the anatomical structure of the fish. These things look quite impressive: it is clear that they have invested a lot of manual labor. The designer does not use animal skin, which helps to keep the perforation as long as possible: natural materials are more easily deformed and crumbled; the same story with silk.
Atelier Kikala has grown from a photo studio, which made surveys with different companies and in 2011 began using clothing of its own design for sets, so the brand appeared the following year. Its creative director Lado Bokuchava graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. He created two full-fledged collections, SS 2013 and FW 2013. The work of the designer is especially interesting. First, he creates mock-ups of things in a dummy technique on a mannequin, then he makes a perforation, cutting out parts manually according to individual sketches. I wonder if the brand will succeed in becoming commercially successful - after all, it produces complex, almost couture things that are difficult to sell.
As a child I liked painting, and I thought that I would connect my life with it, but then the main form of self-expression for me was clothing design. I pay little attention to modern fashion, for me individuality and style are important. In the industry, I appreciate conceptual designers who do not change their vision, despite the trends. We have many good designers in Georgia. Most of all, many of the younger generation are trying to do something new. Music inspires me the most. For example, in the last collection, the Björk song "Storm" served as a starting point. After listening to her, I began to create clothes that resemble a silhouette of a killer whale. The perforation was originally copied from the whale's spine, but then I added the outlines of algae and shark teeth to the pattern.
