10 summer exhibitions in different cities of the world
With the onset of good weather I want to spend more time on the street - but do not forget about the cultural program. Few people plan their holidays for a particular event - but if you have already decided where to go in the summer, nothing prevents you from checking our list and finding an interesting exhibition in the city where you are going.
London
American Jeff Koons - one of the most famous and influential contemporary artists, known primarily as a master of kitsch. At the exhibition in London's Newport Street Gallery, you can see more than thirty paintings and sculptures of Koons, created by him from 1979 to 2014. Like at the other exhibitions of Newport Street Gallery, all the works are taken from the personal collection of another famous contemporary artist, Briton Damien Hirst. Many of them have never before been shown in the UK. Pleasant exhibition bonus - you can visit it for free.
Paris
The Frenchman Henri Rousseau is one of the most famous representatives of primitivism, a trend in art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The name of the exhibition in the museum d'Orsay "Douanier Rousseau" ("Customs officer Rousseau") refers to the fact that for a long time the main occupation of Rousseau remained work at the customs: he was self-taught and began to seriously engage in art only after he turned forty. The exhibition explores the “naivety” of Rousseau’s creativity: Beatrice Avanzi, one of the curators of the exhibition, believes that the obvious “mistakes” in the artist’s works were intentional. The museum d'Orsay will be able to see 40 paintings by Rousseau, as well as many accompanying materials, revealing the context in which they were created, and explaining what inspired the artist.
Vein
The exhibition in Belvedere is studying the interaction of visual arts and photography: at first, artists regarded the technology as a threat to their work, but soon began to use it as a source of inspiration and a tool for creativity. Hans McCarth and Gustav Klimt brought to the title of the exhibition are just one of several artists who liked photography. The curators of the exhibition offer to look at well-known artists in a new way - as photographers and collectors of pictures.
Florence
The Florentine exhibition features more than a hundred works by European and American artists created in the 20s-60s of the last century, its goal is to show the connection between two continents. Here you can see paintings, sculptures, prints and photographs from the collections of Solomon and Peggy Guggenheim, located in New York and Venice, as well as from collections of other famous museums. The exhibition includes works by Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Lucho Fontana, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein and others.
New York
Find an interesting exhibition in one of the many New York museums and galleries is not difficult. We offer to stay at "Unfinished: Thoughts Left Visible" in the Metropolitan Museum. It presents 197 works, from the Renaissance to the present day, which are divided into two categories: works of art that have remained unfinished, and works that only seem unfinished at first glance, because this was the idea of the author. The exhibition explores the topic of work as a process or result and answers the question of what makes the statement final. Until August 14, you can have time to visit another sensational exhibition in the Metropolitan Museum - "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology".
Amsterdam
The Moco Museum of Contemporary Art opened in Amsterdam quite recently, this spring, but with a foot announced itself with two loud exhibitions. They are dedicated to street artist Banksy and the main figure of pop art Andy Warhol, whom the museum’s founders call "rock stars of modern art." The exhibition includes, for example, "Beanfield" Banksy and the print of the portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol, and in total the audience can see more than 50 works. A little more than a month is left before the closing of the Warhol exhibition, so you have to hurry; Banksy exhibition will last until the end of summer.
Athens
This exhibition is the first time that Ai Weiwei's works are shown on the territory of Greece, and a good opportunity to catch modern art and beach rest at a time. Here you can see both the famous works of the Chinese artist and his newer projects: over the past six months, Ai Weiwei threw all his strength to draw attention to the refugee crisis, and spent a lot of time in Greece - the first point where refugees arrive, trying to get to europe. The museum will send 10% of the revenues received from the exhibition to non-profit organizations - "Doctors Without Borders" and the Greek organization METAdrasi - which help refugees in Greece. The works of Ai Weiwei this summer can also be seen in Vienna - his exhibition will open there on July 14.
Melbourne
The other day at the National Gallery of Victoria opened a personal exhibition of Subodha Gupta - one of the most famous contemporary Indian artists. Gupta is known for using everyday objects in his works, which, when placed in a specific context, become works of art. The name of the exhibition - “Everyday Divine” - refers to the idea that everything that surrounds us is permeated with divine essence. In the gallery you can see the famous works of the artist, such as the sculpture "Very Hungry God" and "The Cow".
Munich
The exhibition in the Louis Vuitton space is dedicated to the works of the legendary Belgian director Chantal Ackerman, who passed away last year, and the French artist Annette Messagé. She explores common motives in the works of both women - in particular, the desire to change the well-established ideas of society about women and the struggle for the place of women in the global cultural space. On one of the floors of the site, the short film Akerman "Women from Antwerp in November" is broadcast, on the other there are six works by Messager that she created at different times - from the 70s of the last century to our days.
Moscow
For those who this summer could not go abroad, but still wants to look at pictures from the collections of foreign museums, the exhibition of the Tretyakov Gallery is perfect. Until the end of July, the museum exhibits works from the collection of the London National Portrait Gallery - 49 portraits significant for British culture and history of personalities: government leaders, writers, actors, artists, travelers, and scholars. Until June 26, a reciprocal exhibition, “Russia and Art: the Era of Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky,” with works from the Tretyakov Gallery, is held in the London Gallery.
