Molly Goddard: Delicate and daring outfits from the sea of chiffon

Wonderzine presents young designers and tells where and how you can buy their things. Our heroine this week is Molly Goddard, the founder of the brand of the same name, which produces delicate transparent skirts, baby doll silhouette dresses and frilly costumes.

Louise Wilson, a professor and head of the magistracy at London's St. Martins College, who passed away in 2014, influenced a huge number of British designers from Alexander McQueen to Phoebe Faylo. Molly Goddard, one of the brightest of the pleiad of recent graduates, also notes that Louise Wilson has undoubtedly inspired her for what she is doing today.

With her first collection, an internship with John Galliano and Meadham Kirchhoff showed off the schedule of London Fashion Week in 2014, calling her friends as a model for the presentation. Since then, much has changed: Dazed makes it to the list of the 100 most promising talents, Dover Street Market undertakes to sell it in London and in New York, and Bjork stylists make her personal orders for a pop star.

The girl immediately decided on her own styling and still does not deviate from it: light dresses, blouses and skirts from several layers of tulle or chiffon appear in Molly Goddard from collection to collection. The starting points are varied: here and the Victorian era, and the pop culture of the 90s, including Spice Girls outfits, Barbie dolls, and children's department stores like Gap. For her own presentations, supported by the NEWGEN project (sponsored by Topshop), she always comes up with some kind of action: for example, in the presentation of the summer collection, the models made sandwiches. By the way, to demonstrate the clothes, Molly still prefers to invite girls with non-standard appearance for models.

All things Molly Goddard are made using manual techniques and a huge amount of expensive materials (for example, only this piece took about 40 meters of fabric) - this explains the high cost. One dress on average will cost 1 thousand pounds. However, the relatively inexpensive things that the designer had a hand in are also there: in 2013, before the first full collection, Molly made the line for ASOS, and you can still find something from there on eBay.

It sounds like commonplace, but I really always wanted to be a designer. Even when I was thinking of becoming a farmer, I first of all wondered what I would wear. I always had a notebook with me where I constantly made small sketches. I'm sure now they would have caused me awkwardness. My mother always sewed a lot of clothes, and it also affected me - it seemed to me, it is very easy. I began to invent light dresses for myself to go to parties: I came to the store, bought samples of various fabrics and sewed everything in half an hour. These dresses were never finished to the end, but at least they had a form that I really liked. At that time I was fourteen.
