"Meow The Jewels": Hip-Hop Album Recorded with Cats

Dasha Tatarkova

The best hip-hop duo of modernity Run The Jewels last year released their second album: it was exactly that rare record that surprisingly exceeds all expectations. Simple, but brilliant guys Killer Mike and El-P have earned themselves a serious reputation and well-deserved praise of all relevant sites, but this is not the end of the story. During the pre-order of the album on the duo's website, a strange item worth $ 40,000 called "Meow The Jewels" could be found. The musicians claimed that for this amount they would re-record their album, taking the cat's meow and purr as a basis. Needless to say, the KickStarter campaign was not long in coming.

The fans eventually collected even more money than they needed, and the honest guys went to catch the neighbors' cats and record their meows to re-record the album. No sooner said than done: the other day "Meow The Jewels" really came out. All the beats and melodies are made up of cat screams and purrs, and the songs are completely reinterpreted - and this is as crazy as it sounds. The Pitchfork music site even wrote quite a serious review of "Meow The Jewels", putting the record as an emoji cat with hearts instead of eyes. What is the conclusion of all this can be done? That even an acutely socially gloomy hip-hop can sometimes not be harmed by a pair of seals, and you can not take your own carefree work very seriously. The cover, by the way, was also redone: instead of bandaged hands, now eerie cat's paws. A bunch of musicians from Zola Jesus to Blood Diamonds assisted in the work on the remix album, and in some places, it seems, namoukanal Snoop Dogg.
