To whom to subscribe: StyleLikeU YouTube channel about self-love
CONTINUE TO TELL about decent accounts in social networks through which you can view the whole world. Today, a styleLikeU project has come under our radar, which uses all the possibilities of the Internet to help people gain self-confidence and appreciate their individuality.
In 2009, New Yorker Eliza Goodkind and her daughter, student Lily Mandelbaum, decided that they were both fed up with the standards that the media impose - while many (and themselves) do not fit into the templates and don’t want to be “like everyone else” . Eliza knew very well what she was talking about: she worked for several decades as a stylist in the most popular glossy magazines, from Interview, Marie Claire and Vogue to Vanity Fair and Tatler, and in addition she wore Jennifer Garner, Catherine Zetu Jones and Katie Holmes. Lily, in turn, studied documentary and studied anthropology - in particular, she made a film about orphans in Nairobi. Among other things, Lily's physique differed from the model, with which her mother so often worked, and to which so many strive. Both understood that the habit of fashion and popular culture to impose uniform trends and standards of beauty can only lead to the devaluation of the very idea of individuality or leave millions of people behind.
Eliza and Lily reasoned that nothing motivates as much as a personal example - and so the StyleLikeU project came to light: videos where extraordinary and bold heroes talk about their personal style, their body perception and the difficulties they faced in accepting themselves . At first, the authors of the vloga repelled themselves from self-expression through clothes, but in four years the topics became much wider - here you can find stories about the problems of racism in modern America, and about the difficulties of coming out. As a result, the project has grown into a powerful platform, glorifying the power of the individual, contrary to stereotypes, prejudices and the habit of judging people by appearances. Here are the basic principles of StyleLikeU: “Do not try to be someone else, not yourself”, “Be aware that we are manipulated by marketing”, “Fashion is not style”, “Indifference does not mean coolness”, “Confidence in to yourself is what is beautiful. " What is especially nice is that all these topics are served without frustration and shaking with fists, and women, men of all skin colors and ages become heroes of the shooting.
Here you can find the "wardrobe" of a 68-year-old artist, who wears All Saints at ease, and veteran Afgan, who defines his style of dressing as "Gucci-gothic". In the "The What's Underneath Project" series, girls talk about adopting their physiology, gradually removing clothes. The plus-size model of Naomi Shimada, smiling openly and broadly, tells how her body has changed in spite of diets and exhausting workouts. Instagram star and artist Peter Collins explains why she is fighting for destigmatization of menstruation and hairy legs. Lily Mandelbaum herself also undresses in front of the camera, sharing memories of how desperately trying to get into skinny jeans and brought herself to diets to a strong hormonal failure.
There are hundreds of commercials on the StyleLikeU YouTube channel, which are divided into the categories “Body Image”, “Age”, “Race” and “Wardrobe”, and it is regularly updated. But if this is not enough for you, you can still add to bookmarks a very pleasant project site, which actually works like an online magazine.
