What to do in case of fire to save yourself and loved ones

YESTERDAY IN THE RESULTS OF THE FIRE IN KEMEROVA A FEW TENS OF PEOPLE ARE KILLED. The editorial Wonderzine sincerely condolences to the relatives of those killed and injured in the crash. We have compiled a brief instruction on action in case of fire.

If you are at home

Go away

Even if the fire is not too strong, but there is a lot of smoke in the apartment, it is urgent to leave: the smoke is much more dangerous than the flame. Do not panic. Moisten with water any cloth, towel, garment, attach this object to the nose and mouth and leave the room crouching.

Do not return to a burning room to save valuables, a burnt passport is not worth your life.

Call for help

Leaving the room, warn all oncoming about the fire. If the landing is on fire or heavily smoky, try to get on the roof and wait for firefighters and rescuers. You can also get to the balcony, tightly closing the door. Call for help, attract the attention of passers-by.

If there is no fire in the corridor and you cannot go through it, close the door, cover all the gaps with wet rags, curtain the door with a thick cloth, such as a blanket, if possible, cover with a wet cloth, open the window and call for help.

Close the doors and do not use the elevator

If there is a fire in a small room, do not open doors and windows, fresh air and draft will increase the flame. Before opening the door, be sure to touch it: if the door is hot, it is dangerous to open it - perhaps there is a strong flame behind it. Be sure to close all doors behind you.

Under no circumstances use the elevator. The probability of dying in an elevator is extremely high: when the power goes out, it can stop between floors and fill with smoke, the doors can open on the floor enveloped in flames.

Give first aid to the victims and call rescuers

When approaching a burning building to help out from it, tie up your mouth and nose with a wet rag, cover yourself with a blanket or coat. Bend lower to the floor.

The first signs of smoke poisoning: dizziness, headache, shortness of breath, nausea, loss of consciousness. If one of the survivors managed to swallow smoke and lost consciousness, give him artificial respiration by mouth-to-mouth.

If you are not at home

Leave at the first danger

Immediately leave the room if you smell smoke or smoke, see an open fire or hear a fire alarm. Do not go where strong smoke and visibility is less than ten meters. If smoke is significant, crawl around.

Do not panic. Drop everything and leave.

Help children

If you have children, lead the child in front of you, holding your shoulders, or carry them in your arms. If you have to crawl, the child should be in close proximity - in front of you or below you, but not behind you.

Remember how in airplanes they say: "First put an oxygen mask on yourself, then on a child"? Here is the same principle: if there is an opportunity to wrap a face with a wet cloth, first your face, then the child. If you lose consciousness, the child will be in more danger.

Focus on fire exits

When visiting business centers or administrative buildings, shopping centers, theaters, find out where the fire exits are located, which is closest to you and, ideally, familiarize yourself with the evacuation scheme. Try to remember the route that you go from the entrance to the building.

Do not use the elevator.

Do not try to leave the parking lot in front of the building by car, if you arrived by personal transport - this may make it difficult for firefighters to enter.

If the clothes caught fire

Separately, it is worth mentioning what to do if the person’s clothes are on fire. There is a rule: "stop, fall, ride". Stop: do not run, as your clothes will burn even faster. Fall: lie down - this makes it difficult to spread fire, especially on the face and head (the fire goes up). Ride: it puts out the flames.

You can also use heavy material, such as a rug, coat or blanket, to cover a person with clothes on. If possible, pour water over the person.

If the fire did not spread

Often there is an opportunity to extinguish the fire on your own: use a fire extinguisher, cover with water a flaming rag, close the lid on a lit pan, turn off the electricity and throw the smoke from the wiring from the flowerpot. The main thing to understand and remember, if you can not cope with the fire, go and call firefighters - they will cope with these faster and more professional.

How to prepare for a fire

Follow the rules of fire safety - including do not litter the exit from the apartment, balconies and loggias.

Study the on-site evacuation scheme. Do not ignore the training fire alarm, tell the children about the rules of conduct during a fire.

Take first aid courses. They can be useful to you not only in case of fire.

Buy self-rescuers - personal respiratory protection - for all family members, as well as fire extinguishers. Self-rescuers will help to hold out until the arrival of firefighters.
