Wonderzine talks about the biography of Naomi Campbell, a collection of photographs of Richard Avedon and other new books on fashion, the appearance of which we are waiting for this winter.
Avedon: Women
November 2013
Rizzoli has published a book in support of the Avedon: Women exhibition, which is currently taking place at the Gagosian Gallery Beverly Hills in Los Angeles and is the first mono-exhibition of the work of one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, Richard Avedon. The author of the book is an American actress and critic Joan Juliet Buck, who in the 90s headed the French Vogue, and today Dasha Zhukova, a consultant to the Garage magazine. Joan Juliet Buck worked hand in hand with Richard Avedon for The New Yorker, and today she is releasing a tribute album with the best shots of Avedon made at different times during the 60 years of his career.

Alt drag
February 2014
Berlin artist Sam Ratcliffe prepared the inspiration album Alt Drag, which collected works from 50 obscure artists from Berlin, London, Chicago, New York, Beijing and other capitals, as well as all that modern pop culture can boast: video clips, avant-garde design, eccentric style of local heroes. Among the pictures with the relaxed atmosphere of German squats, English techno-dens and Peking cabarets there is a selection of photos of modern pop icons - Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine and, of course, Lady Gaga. If you flipping through an album for a long time, you can fall into an aids mood that Sam Ratcliffe kindly filled the book with, dress up like Paloma Faith, and desperately hang out at minus 20 on a frosty night. Good book.
A Scene In Between
November 2013
And two more books in our review are devoted to the influence of subcultures and music on fashion. The first is A Scene In Between: Fashion and Independent Music in the UK 1983-89. It came out a week ago from the pen of music and fashion journalist Sam Nee. Sam in the past - a designer Urban Outfitters, art director Topman and consultant Portobello Market and Whistles. In general, an expert on vintage, history and men's clothing. His book is about six years and includes hundreds of various previously unpublished pictures of rock bands (from Television Personalities to The Smiths), their fans, photos from concerts and street styles of the mid-80s (there were anoraks, voluminous sweaters, blouses, leather pants and motor-jackets). Sam collected all the pictures personally, and also recorded the memories of Dave Conway (My Bloody Valentine) and Douglas Hart (The Jesus and Mary Chain) about that time.
Youth Cults: Teen Tribes and Subculture Style
December 2014
The second book is Youth Cults: Teen Tribes and Subculture Style, which covers the evolution of the style of subcultures: from beatniks and hippies to younger mods, punks and lesser-known "scene children" (they are the same scene kids) and "chavov". Each subculture is devoted to a separate chapter with its code. After reading the book, you can not only learn how to make a mohawk and properly tucked up jeans, but also rebel.
Isabella Blow: Fashion Galore!
February 2014
We have already written about the London exhibition in honor of Isabella Blow. In support of the Somerset House exposition, together with the Isabella Blow Foundation and the Central Saint Martins College, they prepared a book of the same name about the main eccentric of Great Britain. On the pages of the publication - more than a hundred photographs taken by one of the iconic photographers of our time and the founder of the Show Studio platform, Englishman Nick Knight. These pictures are an exhaustive overview of Isabella's wardrobe: about a thousand items from the private collection of an English woman, which was not without caps from Philip Tracy and clothes from Alexander McQueen, whose names, I must say, the world just discovered Isabel Blow.
Ecologist Guide to Fashion
February 2014
The Englishwoman Ruth Stiles, a reporter for the British Daily Mail and the author of more than 700 articles for women, prepared a guide on eco-movement in fashion, proving that ecology is not at all boring and even fashionable. Ruth in the book advocates for the preservation of the environment and claims that in 2014 the slogan Green is the new black is in effect. In the publication, you can find tips on how to develop your own eco-awareness, overcome shopping fits and learn to consume less, learn eco-brands and find out how good things are made from organic cotton, and finally understand how to make better not only wardrobe, but also the world around .
