The artist Elaina Varrone lives in Connecticut and loves embroidery so much that she can easily come with friends to the bar, get a hoop and continue working on her paintings over a beer. She first picked up a thread with a needle 15 years ago, as a student at the Maryland College of Art: then she embroidered the famous "Venus" by Botticelli, but today she prefers much more macabre scenes. Elaine can work for days on a portrait of an unknown crypto-zoological beast, then switch to a story about funny girlfriends on the beach, then embroider a horrible face mask, and then transfer an erotic story with the participation of a monster onto the fabric.
Folklore motifs and aesthetics are mixed in Varrone embroidery with mysticism, erotica and humor. The girl is inspired by pop culture (from the classic teenage horror films to the books of Margaret Atwood), medieval drawings and the works of such contemporary artists as Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith and Gad Amer. "One of my favorite things to do is look at local property sites for homes built before 1900 and pretend that I can ever buy one for myself," says Elaine. And indeed, the ideal framework for her works would be the walls of a house with a history - the old, but not old, from one look at such usually goose bumps.
No less than demons and skeletons, in the works of Varro there are naked girls and sex scenes. “I don’t want to seem harsh or arrogant, but I think that the time has passed when artists used erotica in their works just to attract attention,” explains Elaine. they create a respectful context for such plots. I do what I love and trust my instincts until they have ever let me down. " Varrone can spend up to several weeks on embroidery of a story, she comes to the details with great attention, so the pictures are voluminous: a bottle of beer, like real clothes, the characters' clothes are worked out to the smallest nuances, and their hairstyles look better real hair salon. From time to time, the artist releases badges with the most popular and beloved characters - you can buy them on Etsy, and it’s most convenient to follow Elaine's creativity on instagram.
