Ryan Lo: Clothes with greetings Kava and Karwai

IN WEEKLY RUBRIC "NEW BRAND"Wonderzine presents young designers and tells where and how you can buy their things. The hero of this week is a London-based designer of Hong Kong origin, a participant of the prestigious Fashion East platform Ryan Lo.

Ryan Lo, a twenty-five-year-old native of Hong Kong, calls himself a self-taught designer - he says he learned how to create things using tutorials on YouTube, after which he honed his skills at the London studio of the brand Charles Anastase. Ryan's passion for fashion, as is often the case, from childhood: he loved to look at wedding dresses, in particular his mom's wedding dress, and always knew that he wanted to sew clothes. At sixteen, Lo moved from Hong Kong to multicultural London, but, unlike most talented guys from the London design environment, he did not enter Central Saint Martins - he was simply not taken. He admits that he was very upset at first, but now he understands that everything can happen without a diploma from the most important British educational institution in the creative field. Ryan still has vocational education: he graduated from the design course of another prestigious London school of London College of Fashion.

In 2012, Lulu Kennedy, the ideologist and curator of the Fashion East project that supports young British fashion talents, drew the attention of the Ryan Lo brand. Among those who have gone through Fashion East School, a good half of the current composition of London Fashion Week is J.W. Anderson, Simone Rocha, Gareth Pugh, House of Holland, Jonathan Saunders, Marios Schwab, Marques'Almeida, Meadham Kirchhoff, Nasir Mazhar, Roksanda Ilincic. That is, in fact, almost everyone who sets the leading trends in fashion today - both global and British.

Fashion East not only provides start-up brands with assistance in promotion and development, as well as business and PR support, but also organizes a fashion show in London for six of their charges (these are always three men's and three women's brands) - where everything from models to sound and light, designers provide for free. One can only imagine how lucky it was for Ryan to be invited to become part of such a project. By the way, Ryan has become one of the few bachelor designers selected for Fashion East - usually graduates of the Central Saint Martins master's course are included in the list.

At Fashion East, Ryan had to present his collection Spring-Summer 2013, and shortly before the presentation in Paris, famous blogger Susie Bubble contacted him, asking for an exclusive preview of the collection. So their friendship ensued: Suzy, whose family is also from Hong Kong, still supports Ryan and wears his things. A year later, Ryan will get another jackpot - participation in the joint show of Fashion East and Topshop, which means a chance to announce themselves to buyers and fashion editors around the world.

After the spring-summer 2014 season, Ryan ended up collaborating with Fashion East and set sail for free swimming. And, I must say, quite successful: Ryan Lo items can already be bought at the largest online retailer net-a-porter.com, which is a great success for a young brand. However, you should not be surprised - few people will remain indifferent, looking at the Ryan Lo kawai collections with kilometers of ruches, tons of glitter and total pink of all possible shades.

Ryan himself calls himself a huge fan of "Sex and the City" and almost every collection says hello to the heroes of the series: this is a drama about cynical workaholic women who are unsuccessfully looking for love, led by Miranda Hobbs, the carefree extravaganza in the spirit of the carefree and romantic Kerry. Ryan calls his heroine cute and sexy at the same time, a kind hot babe. In addition to "Sex" in the list of sources of inspiration Ryan - and the final wedding outings on shows of Christian Lacroix, and women from Hong Kong film director Wong Karvai, and Kirsten Dunst as Marie-Antoinette, and a whole pile of Disney heroines. Knitwear became an important part of Rayn Lo's brand DNA - the designer works with it from the first collection, skillfully interpreting DIY aesthetics.

The new spring-summer 2015 season was special for Ryan: he was chosen to show Newgen, eight prestigious British designers who opened the doors to Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane, in the fashion world, among eight young British designers. This is another victory on the creative path of Ryan Lo, and no doubt - we will hear about it more than once.

My collections are very girly - I think this reflects the visual aesthetics on which our generation grew up. Subconsciously, we still strive to return to these memories, images that formed girls like Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan in “Mean Girls”. They are the embodiment of our teenage ideals, and even as we grow up we keep these images and involuntarily appeal to them in everyday life. Every person lives with the luggage of his childhood fantasies: for example, someone dreamed of becoming an indie rock star, so Eddie Slimane is now close to him. My heroines, having matured, still want to become princesses
