Why skinny jeans are out of fashion

Olesya Iva

Skinny jeans, which have dominated the women's wardrobe for the last ten years, fade into the background, and they are replaced by loose high-waisted mom jeans - this is what BOF and Style.com state. By the way, seasonal collections of denim by the chief international fashion editors consist exclusively of mom-jeans (yes, this is a real term from the 90s and it's time to get used to it). Do girls no longer want to wear jeans? Yes, and for good reason. First: skinny jeans are inferior in comfort to sports, supercomfortable and beautiful leggings. The second: skinny today look old-fashioned against the background of recent shows and fashion for free sporty-silhouettes. Wide and athletic pants we see at Céline, Dries Van Noten, Chanel and hundreds more brands. Trousers in the fall season are practically absent as a class. In addition, sales of denim are falling, but sports things are growing.

This year, Levi's oldest denim company is celebrating its 80th anniversary since the creation of the first women's jeans. Founded in San Francisco Levi Strauss in 1853, Levi's created the first jeans for women only in 1934. Model Lady Levi's 701 instantly came into vogue from American women, and women won back their right to wear identical men's clothes. It is obvious that the fashion for boyfriend-jeans appeared much earlier than we used to think. The male model of blue denim 501, which is produced from 1873 until now, the girls wore before the release of 701, and they can be understood. It was difficult to imagine a more versatile and comfortable thing than jeans. What else is important? The first female model of 1934, Lady Levi's 701, is reminiscent of mom jeans, which today have pressed skinny. A similar model of straight cut with a high waist was worn in the 50s, the same Marilyn Monroe dressed a white shirt in jeans 701. And an identical model of women's 501 would be allowed into mass production only in 1981 in the wake of fashion for wide and exaggerated things.

"On Mother's Day, do not give perfume. Give her what it means that she is no longer a woman, but a mother"

Skinny jeans came into vogue in the 60s, when young people wanted a change and something more sexual. The company Wrangler introduced a new material from a mixture of polyester and cotton, which allowed to sew the first skinny. Jeans "leggings" quickly became popular among girls, teenagers. However, among the guys - they wore Mick Jagger. Then there were hippie flares, punks and "ragged". In the 80s, Calvin Klein will present provocative advertisements with 14-year-old Brooke Shields in tight-fitting jeans. The slogan from its television version is remembered by many: “You want to know what it’s like?” At the same time, Levi's is promoting unisex and releasing an improved version 501 - Levi's 505 under the slogan "Timeless, dependeable, uncomplicated", which are not much different from the original. We remember in Levi's 505 Madonna in the 80s and Julia Roberts in the 90s. However, the sexy image created by Calvin Klein was still stronger. It was he who changed the idea of the ideal women's jeans. These should be tight-fitting, have a very low waist. It seems that this performance was maintained until today, until this spring the shelves of the same Topshop filled with nostalgic mom-jeans.

Mom-jeans high-waisted straight loose fit with soft denim. The term mom-jeans appeared in American vocabulary in the mid-90s, and then returned triumphantly after the video on Saturday Night Live show with jokes that mom-jeans are ideal for housewives: they sit comfortably and perfectly fit their figures. The movie ridicules the non-sexuality and unfashionable mom-jeans and ends with the phrase: "On Mother's Day, do not give perfume. Give her what it means that she is no longer a woman, but a mother."

As a result, ten years after the appearance of this video, society has come to recognize the most simple and asexual mom jeans as the main thing in modern wardrobe. The history of fashion for mom-jeans is somewhat reminiscent of a story with birkenshtoks: today, first of all, it is fashionable what is convenient and not beautiful. Beauty is too subjective concept. Economists argue that girls choose the most comfortable among the many jeans models - mom-jeans. In addition, it is exactly mom-jeans that fit most normal female figures and look great with the same Birkenstocks.

Another reason for the loss of popularity of skinny jeans is the global trend for post-fitness (après sport). Today, wearing one comfortable thing throughout the day, in which you can go straight from work to a yoga class, is the norm. Why wear jeans and then change clothes? Wide trousers remain in fashion for several seasons in a row. Their workouts in women's casual wardrobe are occupied by sports shorts, leggings, and boxing shorts — they are comfortable and can be worn beautifully and uncommonly. Retailer giants are rebuilding their business and abandoning their thin silhouettes in favor of wide ones. For example, Gap, the main focus of which is denim, is switching to an increase in the production of alternative clothes to jeans: sweatshirts and leggings, and skinny seems to be the lot of rock fans, Eddie Sliman’s collections and Emmanuel Alt style.

What do skinny jeans in Russia love for and does the global tendency threaten to finally exchange skinny for jeans of a free cut? For us, wide trousers are still treated with apprehension (“How is it that the figures are not visible?”), Not to mention the fashion on après sport, which stereotypes hinder to get used to (“Bicycles? Trainers? . It seems that our women only found out about mom jeans yesterday, although the fashion for boyfriend denim has been around for a long time. Russian girls, if you look around, they like things in tight fittings. Why? It is convenient to fill in the boots and uggs, and the ass can be seen.
