Myth or reality: Is it harmful to drink more than one cup of coffee a day?

Text: Anton Mukhataev

EVERY DAY WE HAVE MANY THOUSANDS OF POPULAR COUNCILS, rules and statements, many of which in fact prove to be delusions. We are launching a series of materials in which we will dissect popular opinions and find out whether they are related to reality. Today we understand how many cups of coffee you can drink per day without fear for your health.

Although coffee is the main drink of creative people, many people are wary of it. First of all, because it contains caffeine, which in large quantities can cause insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, heart palpitations, digestive problems, spasms, trembling limbs, and even hallucinations - not to mention addictive. Fearing the list of these ailments, many prefer to either drink coffee rarely, when they want to indulge themselves, or limit themselves to one cup per day - because it is supposedly more impossible. "Caffeine constricts blood vessels, which leads to an increase in blood pressure," says Mikhail Ginzburg, director of the Institute of Dietetics and Diet Therapy, and recommends drinking no more than one cup of coffee per day, and it is better to switch to coffee with reduced caffeine.

So, it turns out - to drink coffee in unlimited quantities is harmful to health?

In large quantities everything can be harmful - even a seemingly harmless drink like tea. But a few cups of coffee a day is even better than one. This follows from recent regulations adopted by a group of American experts. Regulations have been developed for the government's Food and Drug Administration, as well as the US Department of Agriculture.

Experts traced the pattern, which shows that a few cups of coffee per day reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, and the risk of other diseases do not exactly increase. Complications can begin if you take more than 500-600 mg of caffeine per day, that is, more than five ordinary cups of coffee. To die because of coffee, you need to take about 14,000 mg of caffeine, or about 140 cups, - hardly anyone will decide on this. And if so, then you should not deny yourself the pleasure, if after one cup of coffee you want the second, and after the second - the third. The main thing is not to overdo it with sugar - it is he, as follows from the standards, the source of many troubles.

So, if you drink from three to five cups of coffee a day - this is not only not harmful to health, but also reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
