Designer Satu Maaranen: Avant-gardism, handicrafts and landscapes
Under the heading "Fresh Blood", we present young professionals who have not yet become familiar in the pages of magazines, but will certainly have time to do this in the near future. Our heroine today is Finnish Satu Maaranen, beloved by the creative director of Lacoste, thanks to things with prints in the form of landscapes.

Get ready to hear the name of Satu Maaranen more than once: this year the Finnish designer won the main prize of the festival in Yerah for 28 years. Her collection of Garment in Landscape among all others was noted by the president of the jury, the creative director of Lacoste Felipe Oliveira Battista, and the creator of the Business of Fashion publication Imran Amed. Style.com calls the designer’s work a poetic work: she combined handmade fabrics with a cut and shapes reminiscent of the couture of the last century. The main thing in the collection is prints with photos of different landscapes, over which the girl stuck sand and sawdust. This part of the work on the collection gave her the greatest pleasure. The creation of the collection, presented in Yera, was inspired by the large-scale works of a couple of artists, Christo and Jean-Claude. |
The girl received an award of 15 thousand euros. The same prize was won by Chloé prize nominee Camilla Kunz. In addition, giant bows tops, printed trousers and a Satu Maaranen kimono coat will appear in the concept store of RA. Satu Maaranen will also make t-shirts for the French brand Petit Bateau, sponsor of Hyéres 2013. Note that this cooperation is especially valuable and weighty right now: now the creative directors of Petit Bateau are the designers of the Kitsuné brand Gildas Loek and Masai Kurok.
As a teenager, Satu Maaranen worked as a newspaper peddler. She began her career in the fashion industry after graduating from the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Now she not only makes a brand name, but also works as one of the designers of the Finnish textile company Marimekko. The main thing in her collections for the brand with a sixty-year history - prints: hand-drawn floral arrangements and geometric patterns in bright colors. It is not surprising that the profession of an artist has always been an alternative to a designer’s career for Maaranen. |
