The residue remained: the return of makeup with glitter

It would seem that glitter never went out of fashion: liquid or friable glitter is in the lines of various brands that create products for professionals and young customers, they are added to eyeliners, eye shadows, lip gloss and even to face masks. Nevertheless, the second wave of popularity is predicted for the festive texture: the main sources of inspiration are Pat McGrath's work, Marc Jacobs show, Beyoncés make-up for a performance on Coachella and dazzling Fenty products. We talk about the return of glitter and recall its dubious reputation for those who want to take care of nature.

How it started

The first bright appearance of shadows with glitter in the company of a black eyeliner (on the crease of a century, as it was bequeathed by the fashion of the 1960s) happened in the movie “How to Steal a Million”: in one of the scenes Audrey Hepburn wore such makeup. In the 1970s, big glitter came into fashion with confidence, they were chosen by Cher and David Bowie, and glam-rock was even called glitter rock. Since then, the massive interest in glitter and sequins has fallen several times, but many make-up artists and designers have loved glitter in all forms forever. Pat McGrath did skillful work with sparkling accents with her chip, and in 2015 she created her own brand, in which make-up geeks fell in love with the first product - pigment shining like liquid gold.

In the 2010s, glitter was in the beauty blogs, on the catwalks (in any season!) And the carpet, in magazines and at home parties. In 2017, it was announced as the sharpest trend, which is not going to subside in 2018: the publications offer to recall the shows Oscar de la Renta, Giambattista Valli, Chanel and Kate Spade - inspired, you can put only a few sparkles on the contour of the eye or create from glitter mask The most fashionable product for make-up can be worn on the face and body, choose any formats and combinations, without dividing the makeup for day and evening. Makeup disco divas, a thin radiant line under the eyebrow or holographic glitter on the lips - all options will look the same modern.

Why is it dangerous

Despite the fact that glitter of all colors and sizes claim to be a make-up generation symbol, their presence in every third product can be an environmental problem. Microplastic, which is, in particular, cosmetic glitter, does not decompose, enters the oceans and animal food. In The Guardian's article The Dark Side of Glitter, published in January 2018 (you can also read the retelling of Medusa), glitters are shown not at all a harmless product: the appeal of the New Zealand environmentalist Trisha Farrelli to ban the use of the ingredient is mentioned. In addition, glitter in cosmetic products can pose a threat to health: not all of them are suitable for application to the eyes, information about this should be sought on the packaging, and if it is not there, do not risk it, since the sharp edges of the particles can easily injure the eyeball.

If you do not want to give up your favorite remedies with glitter, you should at least reduce their use. Nevertheless, there is always an opportunity to make makeup more environmentally friendly, and if you are interested, try to find alternative banks with vegan and green brands. Bio-Glitter produces eco-friendly cellulose-based glitter: its sparkles decompose in a few months, which significantly reduces the damage. A list of brands and stores that sell such glitter can be found here.

How to do it

Affordable and high-quality glitter products are easy to find even in an online store: crumbly glitter on NYX, eyeliner with glitter and monoteni on Urban Decay, liquid shadows on MAC and Lime Crime. The budget brands Wycon, Essence, Catrice, Kiko Milano often make playful products with glitter in countless collections, and they are in no way inferior to expensive products. It is difficult to find biodegradable glitters in Russia: safe synthetic mica is used in Lush products, which have a not too rich product line for make-up - we hope so far. Shining shadows with the same synthetic mica can be found in the Russian indie brand Sigil Inspired. For those who are often in England, we recommend ordering a couple of cans of the very Bio-Glitter - it costs no more than the popular NYX cans.
