Where to go in the fall: 15 cultural events in the world

We travel no less than read books., watching movies or listening to music, and even at the planning stage of a future trip, we choose where to go and what interesting things to see there. Wonderzine has compiled a small guide to the cultural events of the fall in 10 major cities of the world, where you can go for a weekend or take a week off and relax as it should.

London

Riding to London for a meal is no less exciting than entertainment for the mind and heart. Especially during the annual restaurant festival. At this time, the best places in the city introduce a special festival menu that allows you to try specialties at prices significantly lower than normal. In parallel, gastronomic tours lead around London and arrange thematic lunches under the supervision of popular chefs, and small farmers markets grow in double volume. The schedule of events, prices and composition of participants can be found on the official festival website, and at the same time book a ticket for the gastrotour you like.

The onset of autumn is in itself an excellent reason for going to the capital of foggy Albion. The exhibition "Club to Catwalk: London fashion in the 80s", which is held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, is another. As the name implies, she talks about the influence of the London club scene on the younger generation of designers from the early 80s. One of the main objectives of the exhibition is to show how closely fashion and club life of the decade were connected. The archival outfits of Paul Smith and John Galliano, the covers and issues of The Face and Blitz magazines, and other significant items from the club era can be seen in the museum.

Paris

In the middle of October in Paris a joint exhibition of two cult Mexican artists and once spouses, Frida Caló and Diego Rivera, will take place. Most of their work will be brought from Mexico City from the Dolores Olmedo Museum. They promise that the exhibition will feature Diego Rivera’s epic paintings dedicated to the participants of the communist demonstrations, and his wife’s self-portraits.

Every October in Paris, the district of Montmartre is a large-scale festival of wine and celebrations in honor of the harvest. Small markets with local products and tasting stands with the best wine from a few operating Montmartre vineyards crawl along the streets. The multi-day stroll ends with a parade and fireworks at the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. This year the festival celebrates its 80th anniversary, so it can be assumed that the harvest will be celebrated with a vengeance.

Venice

Autumn is perhaps the best time to visit the Venice Biennale. There are much less tourists and people interested in art than in summer, and the weather is warmer than in Moscow. The winner of this year’s Biennale is the Pavilion of the Republic of Angola and its project, referring to eco-cities with non-waste production. Also, of course, it makes sense to look at what was invented in the Russian pavilion, and evaluate the Danae project with falling coins.

Berlin

The annual echo of the series of European summer music festivals. On the first weekend of September, the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport will turn into a venue with several scenes featuring more than 30 musicians. Headlines of the festival include Blur, Pet Shop Boys, M.I.A., Bjork, My Bloody Valentine and others. In parallel with the open-air, there will be a night program in the clubs of the city. But in general, the place itself - the airport converted into a spacious park - is a good idea to spend the weekend with music and in the fresh air, all the more so since it is unknown whether another such opportunity will come out this year.

The Martin-Gropius-Bau Museum hosts the first major Berlin exhibition of the sculptor Anish Kapoor. A Briton of Indian origin, the artist has prepared about 30 works specifically for this retrospective, and accumulated just as many over decades of practice. Kapoor plays on contrasts (forms and materials, emotions and meanings) and is known for its love of minimalism. If you like to look at strange objects from unexpected materials, then this Berlin exhibition is a must-see event. Tickets for 11 euros.

Copenhagen

In the fall, it is convenient and relatively inexpensive to get out for a weekend in Europe, even if we are talking about Copenhagen, one of the ten most expensive European cities. To kill two birds with one stone - and relax, and arrange yourself an interesting cultural program - it makes sense to go to the capital of Denmark for the second weekend of October. At this time, the Night of Culture takes place here - it's like our Museum Night, only much bigger. For one evening (from 18:00 until midnight) most of Copenhagen’s cultural institutions open the doors, light shows and parades are held all over the city, artists of all stripes, from dancers and musicians to street art artists, perform on the streets. And here you have to choose, arrange a tour of classic museums, explore local cathedrals (in some of them classical rooms of fear will be arranged this night, such as in amusement parks) or go to one of the most exciting events of the holiday - the evening of modern art at Overgaden Institute where young artists will arrange audiovisual performances.

St. Petersburg

Warpaint are four girls from Los Angeles who play hypnotic and sensitive art-rock and which a couple of years ago all reputable music publications called the best new female group. Now Warpaint are working on the second record and are actively touring, they will come to Russia for the first time. In fairness it should be clarified that the group will give a concert in Moscow (November 12), but it’s worth going to St. Petersburg: it’s very Warpaint that fit the general atmosphere of the city. It is even better to take time off until the end of the week and at the same time stay at the big concert of American experimental electronics Baths and Ltd. in the Waiting Room.

Moscow

The Fifth Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art will last exactly one month. The curator of this year was Catherine de Zeger, director of the Museum of Fine Arts of the Belgian Ghent. The main project will be presented in the "Manege", in addition to this will be held a parallel program with exhibitions throughout the city. The topic of the upcoming biennale is “More Light”.

The annual Strelka Ball in honor of the closing of the summer season is in itself one of the brightest events of the Moscow autumn, as well as an excellent occasion to put on an evening dress and even sing karaoke (which we actually did at one of the past balls). This year there is another good reason not to miss this party - its headliner will be a promising Brit with the hoarse voice of King Krule, who sings sad love songs and which we have already been advised to pay attention to.

New York

Photoville is a young pop-up photography exhibit at the picturesque Brooklyn Bridge Park. For the second time in September, the space at the Brooklyn Pier overgrows with dozens of cargo containers, in which, in fact, the works of young photographers from around the world are exhibited. In parallel with the exposition at Photoville, workshops, lectures, parties take place, and in the evenings they arrange light projections. There are also food trucks with the best street food of Brooklyn, where people are poured for a drink, and from the embankment there is a good view of the main downtown skyscrapers.

Indies rock band Pixies broke a 20-year silence this summer, releasing a new song and video first, and a whole mini-album a couple of days ago. At the end of September, the Pixies go on a world tour with a new bass player, and before that you can (and should) listen to the band on the stage of the New York club Bowery Ballroom, located in a building from the 1930s. The club’s official website has already ended the concert tickets, but you can still buy them here.

Tokyo

The relatively young (the upcoming one will be held for the fifth time), the Tokyo Festival, which combines elements of theater and art, takes place in the Ikebukuro district in the northwest of the city. Theatrical groups and artists from all over Asia come here. By the beginning of the festival opens a huge number of small and large sites, some performances are held right on the street.

New delhi

The main Hindu holiday, symbolizing the victory of good over evil and the beginning of the new year in India. The main interest of Diwali for travelers is not so much the value of the holiday, but rather how it is noted by the local population. Thousands of candles and lanterns are lit throughout the city, services are held in churches, residents exchange gifts, and in the evenings they are sure to launch fireworks. Great time to see the capital of India in festive illuminations.
