Virginia Rometeti is the CEO and Chairman of IBM. She took the position of CEO of the company in 2011 and became the first woman in this position. Last year, speaking to graduates of Northwestern University, Rometti spoke about several lessons she had learned over the years. One of the stories that she remembered in her speech came to her at an early stage in her career. At that time, Romettey worked under one of the company’s managers; the man decided to change jobs and invited Virginia to take his post. Then she said that she was not yet ready for such a position, she needed a few more years to work and gain experience.

In the evening, she shared her thoughts with her husband, who helped her look at the situation differently and cope with the doubts that often overwhelm workers when they are offered a promotion. “He, as always, calmly listened to my story, and then looked at me and said:“ Do you think a man would answer this question like that? I know you: in six months you will be ready for the next step. ”And do you know what? He I was right. The next day I agreed to this work. And this brings me to the second lesson I would like to teach you: growth and comfort are incompatible. Close your eyes and ask yourself when did you learn the most valuable lessons? I guarantee you that it was during those moments when you felt vulnerable. According to a study conducted for Time and Real Simple magazines, the fear of failure and the fear that their actions will lead to failure prevent women from moving up the career ladder. The results of the survey showed that, although women work on a par with men, they often lack determination and self-reliance for the next step. Three-quarters of the survey participants, both men and women, said that they would not like to take the post of their boss. At the same time, more than half of the men surveyed said that if they were offered this position, they would agree to it - although the same thing would have done less than a third of women.

Experts believe that in order to succeed, it is very important to leave the comfort zone from time to time: this way you can discover new opportunities that are not available within the previous position, determine what you really know and know, and understand what you are capable. The risks in this situation are higher - but the reward in case of success will be greater. The labor market is changing rapidly: some professions did not exist until recently, other well-known professions have changed and require new skills. Therefore, it is very important to be able to adapt, change and be open to the new - and therefore, be prepared to take risks, learn and take on new responsibilities.
