How has makeup changed and our attitude towards it

Masha Vorslav

Architect Matthew Frederick in "101 Things I Learned in Architecture School" he singled out three levels of knowledge (ok, he did not think of it himself, but this is a known point of reference). On the first one - “simplicity” - any concept or area seems to us to be extremely simple, so that those who are bolder or less prudent, with a sword, rush into the unknown. Then - "complexity" - it comes to them that Everything is Difficult, and they are trying to know what they are. In the third, the "informed simplicity" is already able to embrace the sphere and understand its mechanisms. Further non-lingual attack new areas, but this is another story.

Since the founding of the magazine we tell how to squeeze the maximum out of decorative cosmetics. It would seem that what else could have been told in the “Beauty” section of the year and a half that it exists, but it is not unreasonable for us to think that now we just wallow in the “complexity” stage and explore a very big world of beauty (that cosmetics - one of the tools of knowledge, we do not doubt). We are not even seeing the shores of the "informed simplicity", that is, we do not consider ourselves experts, but have accumulated experience in order to share them. Plus, we are modest enough to listen to more advanced colleagues, learn from them and pass them on.

As long as we know this. The habitual understanding of make-up is outdated (Wikipedia, in its best traditions, leads it), there is no other word in Russian, and no one can invent a new vocabulary alone. Makeup 2.0 is still optional; we usually talk about its diversity, not because we believe that there is no life without cosmetics, but because, for obvious reasons, we appeal to the audience, which she, cosmetics, is interesting. In other words, we believe that the decision to make up or not make up is a personal choice, which we respect (and expect the same from others), but we ourselves like to make up. Otherwise, our work would be silent, and not show how you can apply lipstick, make up an adult woman, or redo the usual Smoky-Aiz.

Secondly, make-up in our understanding has blurred the boundaries, both meaningful and geographical. Make-up is not what the face is made up with, but how the personality and inner convictions come to the surface. The idea is not new, this is what some girls mean when they say "I paint for myself, not for someone." We agree with them, and if we ever break the rules, which we sometimes consciously or unconsciously try to impose (we comprehend, but do not suggest copying trends, for example), then this is a side effect of attempts to expand the track. We don’t achieve this only with decorative cosmetics, so we use stickers, threads and sequins, we are looking for a paint that would hold on the skin, not worse than that of Michel Lamy, and we think how to (and should) be curbed, sorry, swag caps grillz. We have no illusions that we are the smartest and the first: hardly anyone missed the arrows from reflective and fabric tapes and this piercing. Our task is not to miss anything interesting and, if necessary, to interpret and show how to adapt it for life.

At the same time, we are not going to leave “ordinary” decorative cosmetics, we will still write about cool blush, highlighters and eyeliners and make beautiful shots. The thing is that even in a detailed photo instruction it is impossible to fit all the tips that invariably arise when working with any tool. We have accumulated so many ideas (and how many familiar makeup artists are willing to tell) that we want to try to pay maximum attention to each tool, list all the uses that come to mind, and at the same time explain to readers the normal language, why and when the primer will fit and when it is not needed. By ultimatums like "wear lipstick or with a pencil, or not at all", living is, of course, easier, but we are sure that it is more pleasant for a thinking person to make choices for himself - and we consider our audience as thinking.
