Westwood, McQueen, Posen: 7 fashion documentaries

Often, documentaries are not inferior. to inflame passions game cinema. Rise, fall, incredible success stories - stories that could easily become the basis for several biopics. We have collected the best festival films of recent years, in the center of which are the stories of the most important people from the fashion world: from the recognized legend Vivienne Westwood to the present prodigy Zach Posen - without them the industry would be completely different.

Anastasia Narushevich

Westwood: Punk, icon, activist

Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist, 2018

Documentary filmmaker Lorna Tucker, who previously worked with a short meter, received the first nomination of the Grand Prix of the Jury for Sundance for this film, which in itself is a good start to a career. In front of her lens, the main punk icon of the UK, Vivienne Westwood, recalls the most important moments of her own journey: from the early age of the Sex Pistols, which she reluctantly talks about because of the conflict with Malcolm McLaren, to a "re" return to the podiums and worldwide recognition. The director pays special attention to the relations between Westwood and her husband, Andreas Krontaler, who became her permanent collaborator - both in life and in art - and co-authored each new collection.

Drys van Notein

Dries, 2017

Director Rainer Holtzmer managed to get to where strangers are not so often. Namely, in the studio and house of Dries van Noten - one of the most interesting and original designers of our time. Combining, at first glance, patterns and materials that do not match each other, he makes a real revolution and transforms ordinary silhouettes. The geography of the film moves viewers from the show inside a giant warehouse in Paris to a factory in Calcutta, where each embroidery for the Belgian collection is created by hand, and then to a country house in which all things speak about the unique taste of their owner.

Manolo: A boy who made shoes for lizards

Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards, 2017

The name of this designer sounded from the mouth of Carrie Bradshaw almost more often than the word "sex", which is placed in the name of the series. It is not surprising that everyone admits Manolo Blahniku’s love: from the restrained and stingy with the compliments of Anna Wintour to Sofia Coppola, who invited him to work on creating the image of Marie Antoinette. The film's director, Michael Roberts, is a former director of fashion and style at Vanity Fair and an old acquaintance of the designer himself, as can be seen from the ironic tone of the first-person story, whose author is not averse to making fun of listeners.

Mcqueen

McQueen, 2018

Collected from archival records and a series of interviews with relatives and relatives of Alexander McQueen, who died early in life, the story of Ayan Bonhota and Peter Ettedgi became the postscript of his career eight years after the tragedy. All the images that he somehow created, emphasized the best in man, revealed his inner beauty, but at the same time paradoxically revealed the fragility of the internal structure. It is difficult to imagine a designer of such a scale; with his departure another era began in the fashion world with its own rules, which he successfully avoided in his time.

House of z

2017

The youngest designer on this list, Zak Posen, at the age of thirty eight managed to hold a lot of shows, abandon contracts with Gucci and Dior and develop his own brand. But the story, which television producer Sandy Kronopoulos decided to take, shows the dark side of the fashion industry, which is rarely spoken of aloud. Along with the admirers of talent, the designer is always followed by detractors who are ready to do everything to discredit his work. Posen managed to survive the almost complete disappearance of the brand from the covers to the present Renaissance in his career.

We margiela

We Margiela, 2017

The experiment, unique in its idea, tells the story of not one designer, but the whole team of Martin Margiela's brand staff. Those same "people in white coats", who created the collection, first under the guidance of the mentor, and then - independently. In striving for the final result, they erase any boundaries of the personality and call themselves "We". One should not expect the appearance of the designer himself on the screen: the idea of the director Menna Laura Meyer was not in revealing Margela's personality, but in strengthening the myth about him. A special role in the film is played by the main character - the muse of master Jenny Meyers, who tragically died a year before the premiere.

Andre's Gospel

The Gospel According to André, 2017

The man who worked for thirty years in the American Vogue and was rightly called the right hand of Anna Wintour, occupies a special place in the list of those who influenced the fashion industry. Directed by Keith Novak, choosing an immodest title with reference to the Bible, examines the phenomenon of success of Andre Leon Telli. As witnesses of his talent, she invites designers Tom Ford, Mark Jacobs and Diana von Furstenberg and many others. So the audience will know what makes it a truly unique influencer after so many years and why it is called "Nelson Mandela in the world of fashion."
