Trend: Cocktail Rings

Initially, cocktail rings were called massive rings that girls put on at parties. Most likely, the first such rings were worn on illegal dances during the times of Prohibition in the USA. Cocktail rings won particular popularity in the 40s and 50s, when for Mojito and Manhattan they were no longer imprisoned. At this time, cocktail parties were no longer held everywhere, but wearing a ring with a large precious or semiprecious stone was still considered special chic. In the golden era of Hollywood, the actresses began to wear them on Broadway premieres and at the Oscar and Emmi awards: large rings could be seen even from a distance. And after - almost everywhere, but only in the evening.

It is difficult to say which jewelry brands have no rings that could be used for cocktail. Such rings make and large jewelry brands like Chopard, Palmiero, Bulgari, Mikimoto, Stephen Webster, and brands that produce expensive jewelry - Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin or Dries Van Noten. Some models of cocktail rings have already become classics - for example, the Nudo collection of the brand Pomellato. The mass market in the face of Topshop or H & M is not far behind: the latter are twisted as they can, using rhinestones, plastic and glass.

French Vogue has always been famous for its jewelry shots: the former editor-in-chief of the publication, Karin Roitfeld, is known for her love of jewelry. Shooting with Anya Rubik and a huge python in the February issue of the magazine or with Natasha Poly and fried chicken made a lot of noise.

If before the rings were worn exclusively with dresses and in the evening, now they are relevant during the day. They began to be combined with jeans, with monochromatic T-shirts, while restraining the desire to put on also chandelier earrings, and many chains. A large number of jewelry, worn at the same time, looks best on the pages of magazines. Units like Daphne Guinness are able to successfully beat such combinations in life.

The fashion for cocktail rings in half a finger and more is a tribute to the style more is more, which is now promoted to the masses through the efforts of Anna Dello Russo and other heroes of Tommy Ton. In the jewelry shootings of this year, we increasingly see huge diamonds, emeralds, grenades and sapphires on each finger, bracelets are still fearlessly added to them. And I like it.

Although I myself do not wear such jewelry often. Sometimes I try to wear during the day, but modestly put it aside. I use it on special occasions and I love it when the color of the stones is combined with the clothes: I will wear a thin green striped jacket to my emerald ring.

From the novelties, I liked the Tigre ring from Carrera y Carrera, in general, the whole animal theme and rings with Byzantine weaving. And from Russian designers I adore Elena Okutova jewelry - I am going to replenish my collection of cocktail rings with her.

Today, cocktail rings are called rings richly decorated with stones with a strongly widening spike. In this case, the phrase "cocktail ring" refers, rather, not to a specific form of decoration, but still to the function, to those cases when such a ring is worn. Just a diamond ring, for example, is a subject quite intimate, it can be seen on the girl’s finger solely close. Cocktail ring, by contrast, works in the middle distance, and in the twilight, and in the crowd. It is striking and becomes the main focus. This is such a special ring for show.

Something similar to modern cocktail rings began to appear in the modern style and was already quite clearly formed in the 30s with Art Deco. At this time, the design and fashion were quite aggressive in relation to the human body, constantly putting it in new fantastic worlds. Then the fictional future met with a prehistoric past, avant-garde ornaments with African masks. Even now, this mood is preserved in the cocktail rings. They are hypertrophied to the inconvenience and resemble an incomprehensible futuristic device or a shaman's tool.

Realizing that, by definition, a cocktail ring cannot be subtle and delicate, almost all modern jewelers in every possible way try to knock pathos off these palaces on their finger. Some people are experimenting with images of antique, rudely made, oriental jewelry. Others - with skulls and mass-cultural images.

Some try to deconstruct this type of jewelry by using non-standard, non-jewelery material, generally generalizing, but maintaining a recognizable shape. Finally, the ironic attitude to the pomp of cocktail rings led to the emergence of a whole tradition of wearing them on a chain as a pendant.

Cocktail rings will always be relevant. Due to their pretentiousness, brightness and massiveness, they give unusualness to anyone, even the most trivial and inconspicuous. And if the outfit is just as unusual, then such a ring can bring the image to the state of a festive firework, which is especially important in connection with the upcoming holidays. But, of course, it is important to maintain common sense.

Increased interest in such rings is due to several factors. One of them is that gradually women began to relax, to move away from established generally accepted trends, to become more interested in fashion and experiment. Of course, it was always peculiar to young people, but now I’m talking about the older generation, watching which, I often find pleasant changes.

I think that for the bulk of the most attractive in such rings will always be precious stones. Bright, large, brilliant, breathtaking colors and designs. But I personally have a slightly different look at it. I make rings from almost everything. It seems to me interesting to introduce more and more new materials into fashionable everyday life, to show people that a ring with a piece of asphalt can quite compete with a ring made of black charoite, for example.

Cocktail ring is an accessory that can subdue the whole image, become the main accent. I, as a jewelry designer, are certainly pleased when the subject of my work assumes a dominant role. I like these jewelry with complete freedom of thought and image. Creating such a ring, you can completely untie your hands and head. Screw up abundantly and still stay within the framework of the genre.
