8 films on which you can learn the fashion of the 90s
Fashion is cyclical, but contrary to popular belief, the brands do not simply copy religious items from different eras, but try to rethink them. Huge platform shoes, neon colors, “ugly” crab pins, wide jeans at high waist, tiny sunglasses, bulky hair bands, bicycles and other elements of fashion twenty years ago come across in the collections of various designers. The 90s are not only famous for their minimalism, which is reflected in the collections of Helmut Lang or Jil Sander, including the golden era for subcultures, which certain clothes helped to distinguish between "our" and "alien" ones. "Pulp Fiction", "Stupid", "Pretty Woman" - perhaps the three main films that are advised to watch at the mention of the fashion of the time. We show a few more pictures in which the mythologized decade left its mark on the outfits of the heroes.

Hackers
Hackers, 1995
One of the most famous films of Angelina Jolie, in which the actress appears with a short haircut, a noticeable make-up and in a white and red biker jacket Suzuki. The clichéd era will not be found here: the heroes of the film are part of a subculture invented specifically for Hackers. Nonetheless, it is easy to feel their community, partly due to outfits - among them were latex costumes, leopard sleeveless T-shirts, wide trousers with pockets, and T-shirts with inscriptions.
Roger Burton, a historian, stylist, costume designer and collector, invented this magnificence. Today, he is promoting his Contemporary Wardrobe project, providing rental archive collections of vintage Comme des Garçons, Chanel and other brands. Conventionally, the costumes he invented for the characters of “Hackers” could be described as “camp cyberbank” - given the theme of the upcoming exhibition in Met, the relevance of the film is difficult to overestimate.

The street style of the young Winona Ryder is the epitome of the careless chic of the 90s, which blogs and even instagrams devote to. Editions make a list of the "scary" roles of the actress, which can be inspired by Halloween. She herself does not hesitate to wear things that attentive fans can notice in her old photos, for example, a T-shirt from 1991.
“Deadly Attraction”, “Reality Bites” and “Interrupted Life” were removed from the late 80s to the early 2000s, and all, one way or another, influenced the formation of the actress in the status of a fashion icon. The Reality Bites, released in the mid-90s, despite its low rating, is a kind of chronicle of the style of those who at that time were a little more than twenty. Sandals on a small platform, vests with an ethnic print, dresses in small flowers, white shirts without sleeves and, of course, memorable frames - all these things remain symbols of the era today.

What style should prevail in the film about music, released in 1992, which takes place in Seattle? It is unlikely that you can do without grunge. Plaid shirts, T-shirts over long sleeves, coarse boots and thick socks — the outfits of Cameron Crowe's “Loners” heroes are predetermined by time and place. It is curious that the description of the film “Loneliness is a misfortune of the end of our century” is easy to bring under contemporary realities - only the lazy did not have time to speculate about how the modern young generation consciously refuses any thoughtful relationship.

We began to actively talk about the cult of things and overconsumption already in the late 80s, therefore films about office life, yuppies and law offices stand apart in the context of that time. "Primal Fear" - the judicial drama with Edward Norton and Richard Gere in the main roles, the first of which received an Oscar nomination for the film.
Dresses that a successful lawyer, that a modest teenager is easy to imagine today, both on the streets and on the screen (with the exception, perhaps, of too wide ties). Particularly noteworthy is the image of the heroine Laura Linney, who wears colored deuces at work in the best traditions of power dressing, and at home a gray mohair sweater and loose jeans. Costume Designer made Jannin Oppuoll, who still works in Hollywood. Director Gregory Hoblit later praised her creative flexibility: despite the love of moderation, here she deliberately paid attention to many small details.

A film about a teenager wasting his incredible abilities is wasted not only by the skillful dialogues and charisma of Matt Damon and Robin Williams. The picture clearly delineates with the help of stylistic methods two worlds in which the action unfolds: the scope of the academy with its students and teachers in argyle sweaters, and the life of the street with tatters in sports suits and Champion T-shirts.
Interestingly, Matt Damon recalls this movie with touching nostalgia - in an interview devoted to the anniversary of the film, he, for example, told the following about the hairstyle of those years: "For some reason, perhaps because of my age, I loved her very much. If you look to Ben Affleck's hair in this film - it looks quite acceptable by today's standards. But what was my problem, I don't know. "

Another interesting point is the contrast between the antipode sisters, the beloved of all, Bianca and the nonconformist Katharina, whose dissimilarity is noticeable at first glance. A simple example: at the scene of a conversation with his father, Katharine is wearing a camouflage T-shirt on thin straps, and on Bianca, a pink cardigan and a floral-patterned top. Small earrings, flip-flops on the platform, cargo pants - all the details of the very end of the nineties are loved today.

An underestimated film about sisterhood and support with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock starring - another film in the constellation of works about witches, which, along with "Sorcery" and "Charmed" will be close to many today. Recently, i-D magazine even released a whole article about why in the context of the modern agenda the forgotten “Practical Magic” remains as never before relevant.
Glasses with colored lenses, nightie dresses, transfer tattoos on her arms and characteristic witch hair from the 90s - all this was invented by Oscar-winning costume designer Judyana Makowski. It is curious that the skillful treatment of such a style subsequently helped her to get a job in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone."
My personal state of Idaho
My Own Private Idaho, 1991
One of the favorite films of the decade, "My Personal Idaho State," will forever remain a monument to Rive Phoenix, who died very young. It is believed that the director Gus Van Sant wrote the script of the tape under the influence of the beatniks prose, and this homage is noticeable throughout. The story of the search, the strain and loneliness is supported by expressive costumes that become a continuation of the characters and give the key to their understanding.
A velvet jacket, a bini hat, pushed to the back of the head, denim shirts - this is what the Phoenix personage appears to be, a homeless guy with narcolepsy. Hero Keanu Reeves, who becomes his companion and object of love, also appears the main part of the film in semi-working clothes. His final image with a tie and a strict coat - even a few frontal and even comical - clearly makes it clear to the viewer how much the heroes are distanced from each other.
