What can you learn about the style of the 90s from the film “Nowhere” by Gregg Araki

Olesya Iva

We much attention We pay to trends and modern fashions, but it is worth understanding that they are only guidelines that each interprets in its own way. The style is shaped, among other things, by the influence of the surrounding reality and culture, including art, films or video clips. We are launching a rubric in which we will analyze the works, from which one can learn a lot of knowledge about the fashion of the era and adopt a number of stylistic techniques. Today we will talk about the cult film Gregg Araki 1997 "Nowhere", the final directorial "apocalyptic trilogy about adolescents."

“Nowhere” with James Duvale in the lead role tells about one day in the life of LA teenagers who have fun in the whole film, have sex and die in turn, representing a “generation that has nothing to rebel against anyone else”. The soundtrack of the film is composed of the favorite music of the director - industrial, shogasez and postpunk, from Massive Attack to Slowdive and Radiohead. However, the film deserves the most attention not even for the plot, but for its shameless bright visuals and style of the characters, which is a concentration of ideas from the fashion of the 90s.

Nowhere is the type of films that I want to make into visual quotes, as if created for screenshots and a toggle switch: I want to pause it again and again, examining in detail all the characters, including those that flash in the background. Not surprisingly, i-D and Dazed & Confused stylists still seem to use the techniques from the film. For the costumes of all the characters in the film answered Sarah Slotnik, whose work can also be seen in "Angels Charlie" and "Alpha Dog". The team of six people led by Jason Reil, who made hair and make up in another cult film Araki "The Generation of the game" Doom "", dealt with the hairstyles and make-up of the characters.

The film begins with the fantasies of the main character Dark. In one of them, the dangerous girls Kozy and Kriss appear - as modern Hels-goths, they wear black and white, prefer latex and collars. Separately, it is possible to note straziki and pigtails, as well as the iconic square, replicated by pop culture in the mid-90s after the release of "Pulp Fiction" and rethought Araki in his own way, and even before the release of "Nowhere" - in the second film of the trilogy "Game Generation" Doom “".

Plastic watches, chokers on the neck, lilac hair, top and neon linen - all the same we see now in fashion, nostalgic for the end of the 90s. Of course.

Sunglasses of all the characters in the film - a separate fetish. There are a huge number of them, and each form can be easily entered into the wishlist.

A hero named Montgomery with eyes of different colors looks like a reference model of modern shows and filming of the 2010s.

Rave culture throughout the film will manifest itself in all its diversity. Here we are caught not so much by suspenders and a chain around the neck of a hero named Cowboy, but by psychedelic dresses of heroines.

Sports glasses in the style of the 90s still excite the imagination of stylists. True, about the fact that they can be cool to combine with a sexy corset, many have forgotten for some reason.

The main thing here is hair and makeup. Dark lipstick and eye shadow, front sight, as well as arrows and contour pencil on the lips are a couple of shades darker than lipstick. Now you know how to get ready for a date.

Thin eyebrows, stupid T-shirts with kittens, quads, pearl lipstick, disheveled tail - there are a lot of elements of the 90s style in these frames. The main thing that reminds us of the style of the heroes of Nowhere, the 90s flirted with adolescence. And more: braces are cool.

A heroine named Egg wears a textured A-line dress and so-called gel boots, which are not the first season to be found in Topshop and American Apparel. In this frame, the Egg meets the idol of the young, dressed in the fashion of the 50s, and goes on a date with him, which will end in tears for her.

Sex symbol of the early 2000s, Ryan Phillip looks like a soloist of the group "Dirty Rotten Scammers" here. In spite of this (or because of this), you will remember his outing with a girlfriend who wears only ultrashort tight-fitting dresses for a lifetime. The main thing is to watch the scene with chocolate.

Images on the rollers are canonical for the 90s: everything is funny, almost childish. The image of the heroine Lucifer with lilac hair is quoted by the group Aqua in the clip "Barbie Girl". Or vice versa - both the clip of the Swedish pop group and the Araki film were released in May 1997.

This frame simply reminds us that cool sunglasses are already half the success.

And also that if you wear a mom-jeans with a corset, then you can get acquainted with black Elvis on a motorcycle. Which, however, for some reason looks like a stylist Alexander Rogov. Or vice versa?

Although Shannen Doherty and Rose McGowan in this episode will only jaw, Araki reminds: braces and braces - not a reason for complexes. In addition, this trio personifies the artificial beauty that comes on the heels of the heroes of the early 2000s, with its characteristic exploitation of the sexual Barbie style.

A hero named Cowboy looks like a young Banderas, but the main thing in his image is a hairstyle that does not give rest to modern stylists of the shows Louis Vuitton and Raf Simons. Not to mention the fact that for a Russian person the bangs and haircut "Ivan" are especially dear to the heart.

Rough boots, knee-highs and a short dress are a much more sexy look than a short dress plus heels.

Bondage is also sexy. Do you have scotch?

A hero named Zero and his girlfriend played by Mina Suvari in the film on the strength of 13 years. From this scene it is worthwhile to adopt the characters' hairstyles, and also to recall that a little white dress is sometimes more important than a black one.

The main characters dress up - now to play the game "Kick the can." Montgomery - on the normal in a white T-shirt and shorts. Girls in short skirts and crop tops. Special attention deserves the makeup blue-haired Kathleen Robertson (and not only).

Atari group members are not the most pleasant characters in the film. However, blue lipstick and collar even make them examples to follow.

Just a reminder of the importance of cool glasses.

From this moment on, the characters get to the main party of the film. There is a need to carefully monitor all the details, even in the background, where curious episodic characters flash. So, we start the countdown "One hundred outfits for the wild tusyzh." Here is the first portion.

“Blood is fun,” exclaims Ryan Phillip and cuts out an anarchy star on his arm. You should not go to such decorative measures.

Jean-Paul Gauthier worked all his life on the concept of underwear as outerwear. Well, here she is in action.

Ugly fur and leopard fur coats are guaranteed to make you a crazy street preacher cool style.

James Duval in Nowhere is an adherent of style reception, who is now called normcor. Simple jeans and T-shirts, lacking only white Nike sneakers.

Here is a bright masculine image, which is often adopted by the gay culture. Reminds George Michael from hell.

The stylists of the new i-D cover with Rihanna have clearly reviewed Araki. Yes, all the good has already been invented and re-thought more than once. For example, popular in 2015, the Hels-Gothic.
