Huge hats in new collections
IN A CONSTANT WONDERZINE HEAD talks about trends from the podium that can be adapted for your wardrobe for the next six months. In this issue we understand why people in gigantic hats appear on the catwalks and streets.
How it all began
Hats were in the women's wardrobe, it seems, always, evolving along with fashion. Those hats that are in question today are, first of all, citing the fashion of the 80s and Buffalo style. Malcolm McLaren created the huge Buffalo hat for the Vivienne Westwood collections "Nostalgia of Mud" and "Buffalo Girls" in the early 1980s. Thus, he set the direction and style for the party of the same name in London, the formation of which we recently wrote. We see the Buffalo style in the 80s of Ray Petri and Jamie Morgan, as well as in the video of Malcolm McLaren and The World's Famous Supreme Team 1982 "Buffalo Gals". So, the guys wore giant hats with voluminous jackets and baggy trousers, while girls wore voluminous skirts and dresses from the Vivienne Westwood collection, shawls and plush jackets. In addition to hats in the course were giant caps with long peaks, to a tee such today are represented in the collections of DKNY.
It is the manner of hip-hop musicians of the 80s that Farrell Williams stylists - Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn - broadcast today: adidas leather jackets, gold chains, Stan Smith sneakers, and of course Buffalo Vivienne Westwood hat. In such a hat, Farrell appeared at the 56th Grammy Ceremony, as well as in the Marilyn Monroe video, reviving the fashion for large hats, which designers today are picking up.
How to wear huge hats now
The giant Buffalo hats appear today in Style.com reports on the cover of Teen Vogue, as well as in collections not only of Vivienne Westwood and Vivienne Westwood Red Label, but also of the Swedes Acne, Gareth Pugh and in the pre-autumn Lanvin collection that goes exactly in the footsteps of Bufallo style: hats in combination with loose-fitting jackets and wide trousers, soft coats and sweatpants.
However, we see the growing trend for giant headdresses among other brands, which in the design appeal to different time periods and noticeably warm up interest in hats. The Lanvin house, which began in 1889 as a hat workshop, traditionally includes hats in the collections. However, they were absent from the Lanvin collections for several seasons and returned only this year: models in giant hats decorated with feathers opened the autumn-winter show of the brand. Marco Zanini returns surreal beautiful hats in the spirit of the 30s and 40s to the podium in the autumn fashion show Schiaparelli; A.F. Vandevorst and DKNY include huge caps in the style of the 80s, and Rick Owens - rather strange African hats; Saint Laurent is a wide-brimmed classic of the '70s, and Kenzo, already on a 2015 cruise, is bulky hats in the spirit of the' 60s. However, huge hats can be found in the collections of even Ukrainian designers - there are such, for example, Anton Belinsky.
Watch out!
Hats can change your look drastically, so wear them carefully, and Buffalo hats all the more. However, modern fashion and especially the approaching autumn season offer maximalism, psychedelia and absurdity, so now is the time to make friends with hats. Coats, jackets, loose trousers, dresses, white T-shirt and Levi's 501 jeans - you can wear a hat with a million looks. Only the most obvious things should be kept in mind: hats are not worn indoors, and straw ones are made only for the beach.
