Aesthetics of the 1990s and prints with Dasha Selyanova wallpaper
IN THE WEEKLY RUBRIC "NEW MARK" Wonderzine presents young designers and tells where and how you can buy their things. Our heroine this week is St. Petersburg resident Dasha Selyanova, who makes a personalized clothing brand in London.
recent years most talented designers are leaving college in Britain. This can be said both about the main hopes of the industry in terms of commerce - Christopher Keine and Mary Katranza, and about independent designers like Meadham Kirchhoff. The latter is Dasha Selyanova from St. Petersburg: she is educated at Central Saint Martins and makes the ZDDZ clothing brand. The influence of the 1990s is felt in her collections. So, in the autumn-winter season, the designer offers cropped sweaters, transparent tight-fitting dresses, and oversized leather jackets. The key detail of Selyanova’s style is prints: the designer creates them on the basis of posters and wallpapers.
Selyanova has a rather impressive education. She studied at St. Petersburg State University and "British" at the faculties of graphic and fashion design, then went to the University of Hertfordshire, where she received a bachelor's degree in the design of women's clothing. In 2011, she entered Central Saint Martins, completed an internship at Danielle Scutt and opened her own brand. Initially, her friend Zoya Smirnova worked on the brand together with Selyanova, but she decided to leave the project because she was ill with the illustration. Selyanova is also engaged in drawing: her works were published in Slashstroke. Now ZDDZ is preparing a joint collection with Oh, my and projects with street artists and photographers.
Back in 2002, I once chose between the Faculty of Philology at St. Petersburg State University and the Faculty of Graphic Design ibid. Almost decided to embark on the path of a philologist, but then accidentally spotted on the wall a schedule of the 6th course for philologists, and philological obsession receded. I entered the faculty of design, and then in 2008 entered Fashion Design at the British Higher School of Design. Why? Clothing is 3D, design and illustration are 2D. Accordingly, 3D is more interesting for me, since it can accommodate 2D, it is a more complete way to express your vision. I dress comfortably, mix feminine style with streetwear. I do not like clothes that even in some way restrain movement, I can not stand boring clothes. I create clothes for girls who are not particularly following trends and are free in their choice of clothes. Those who wear a light dress with a bomber jacket and naykas and without makeup will leave the house. Frankly open clothes, my client would prefer things with straight silhouettes. She is confident enough not to attract people with open parts of the body and wear what she wants, and not what is fashionable. Clothing for her is important as a way to express herself, so she often chooses things with a print: this is a great way to tell her story, to define her view of things.
