Vizazh, Vizazh: Favorite make-up from clips 80's
Text: Ksenia Obukhovskaya
The eighties are the sunset of the great disco era, which was replaced by a new wave, post-punk and energetic men in leggings with guitars and makeup. This decade was perhaps the most expressive in terms of appearance, and its echoes are visible in fashion for many years in a row. We recall ten images from the clips of the 80s that inspire us.
Siouxsie and the Banshees "Candyman"
There was no better time for eye makeup than the 80s. Suzy Sue, founder of the post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees and part-time gothic princess, is proof of that. In her videos, Susie does not spare the eyeliner and the shadows, is not afraid to play with geometric shapes and appears before us either Cleopatra, or the heroine of a silent movie, or the tragic mime with a bleached face and black lips.
The Cure "Lovesong"
UK gave us more than one icon of style, and this is a fact. Bypassing the make-up of Robert Smith, a man who wears eyeliner better than all of us, is embarrassing and simply blasphemous. The Cure soloist dances and sings about love on a romantic background in the unchanging image of the melancholic pale Byron in black. His image is complemented by Smokey Aiz, red lipstick and a nest of charcoal black hair. The appearance of Robert Smith has long become a classic and proved to the world that the boys do not cry just because they do not want to smudge cosmetics.
Culture Club "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?"
The aristocratic Boy George dances through the decades to a sad love song, evoking condemning glances from mere mortals around him. The point in the video ends with the fact that the hero is arrested and put in a monkey, we assume - for his unearthly beauty. The Сulture Сlub group appeared on the wave of the British “new romanticism”, which just promoted the idea of androgyny, honoring David Bowie. As a result, the singer’s androgynous image became his business card for many years: perfectly outlined eyebrows, golden shadows, burgundy lips and long hair never looked at anyone so organically.
Madonna "Papa Don't Preach"
The young Madonna, who has already found herself in the image of Monroe, but not yet completely retreated from her roots, is dancing in a corset and nostalgic for the times when she was a perky little girl from an Italian working-class family, struggling with moral dilemmas and eternal questions of fathers and children. In this clip Madonna has slightly disheveled blond hair and quite typical make-up for that time: dark eyebrows and eyes, brown lips. The singer appears before us in the form of a tomboy, in classic mom-jeans and a vest, as if hinting that the 90s are about to begin and soon everyone will walk like that.
Cindy Loper "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"
Still quite young and childish, sweet Cindy Loper is already on her way to becoming a fiery woman in every sense. The plot of the video is simple and probably will seem familiar to many: a mother burdened with household chores with a rolling pin and dad in a Hawaiian shirt does not allow a girl to quietly go to parties with her friends. Cindy sings about the girlish right to fun in a red dress with red lips and golden ages that set off her fiery-colored hair. All this is complemented by massive earrings, glasses and pendant. If it still seems to you that this is brute force even for the 80s, then review all the videos first.
Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams"
Another clip that reminds us that in the 80s androgyny was at the peak of popularity. Short red hair, aristocratic pale face, eye accents, reddish-brown lipstick and pronounced cheekbones - Annie Lennox's detached beauty reminds us of the Bowie of Ziggy Stardust's time, which, we repeat, became a key figure in shaping and developing styles in British pop culture 80 -y's In this video, everything is fine, besides the accompaniment of a gloomy synth-pop enters into a trance state in the good sense of the word.
Pointer Sisters "Jump (For My Love)"
Before Destiny's Child and TLC appeared, America had The Pointer Sisters, who played a mix of R & B, disco and soul. Characterize the makeup of the legendary California Girl's band in one word: mother of pearl. On all the girls silver shadows and pearly brown lipstick. A rampage of curly hair, gypsy dresses that are constantly picked up, large gold earrings are attached. However, in the case of Pointer Sisters with their mad energetics, the lack of diversity in costumes and make-up is not enough. Moreover, this did not prevent the girls from getting three Grammy awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Blondie "Atomic"
Another woman who loves nacre and does not hide it. Debbie Harry emphasized her eyes with blue shadows or Smokey Eyes, and her lips with mother-of-pearl gold, brown or red lipstick throughout her career, and we remember it in her girlish hooligan way. If earlier in a miniature blonde in a dress in the style of the 60s it was impossible to say that she was at the origins of American punk rock and new wave, now all doubts have evaporated. Debbie opens the 80s with a disheveled square, in torn pantyhose and in a futuristic vest from a garbage bag, really like after an atomic disaster.
Whitney Houston "I Wanna Dance with Somebody"
In the early 80s, Whitney Houston was just a promising new face, but here she takes such high notes and looks so bright that it is immediately clear who will be the star here. On Whitney, bright, almost fluorescent pink lips, blue shadows, which are layered pink, and dresses about the same palette. It seems to be the basic canons of makeup of the Soviet saleswoman observed, but everything looks more than organic. Whitney also does not go away from the traditional aesthetics of the 80s and is experimenting with various bouquets and decorations.
Roxette "The Look"
Swedish duet members Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson look almost identical to each other, again destroying any gender differences. In the video for the song "The Look", which glorifies the image of a femme fatale, who sometimes behaves like a man, Marie has natural makeup and a pile of blond hair, and Per has the same thing, only in a dark version. The duet looks Scandinavian ascetic, rather than stands out, and does not fade against the background of his contemporaries. In addition, Roxette is almost the only Swedish group except ABBA, which made it to the first lines of the American charts, which was rarely possible for Europeans.
