New norm: the return of unusual tights

TELLING ABOUT TRENDS FROM PODIUM which can be adapted for your wardrobe for the next six months. In the new issue we understand why colored tights and patterned tights have returned to fashion, with which to combine them and how to adapt to the wardrobe in accordance with the spirit of the times.

How it all began

When looking at the photos of street styles from European fashion weeks, there is a feeling that there are no tights or they are used as a decorative item of clothing. But one thing is spring Milan and its dry plus 12, and another is Moscow in the offseason or uncompromising winter minus 20. For Russian reality, tights have always been and will forever remain a necessary item of clothing. At the same time, we are extremely wary of any unusual tights: colored, knitted, lace or with a pattern - wearing such tights is considered appropriate if you are not more than 12 years old. For adults - transparent solid and black dense for the winter. That's all. However, bright tights had their moments in the history of fashion, and in the new season designers advise not to be so categorical in their attitude.

The real peak of crazy tights fell on the 60s: printed A-line mini-dresses and skirts combined with them. None of the fashion photography of that time could do without colored pantyhose or pantyhose with a geometric pattern - they were worn by well-known loafers, and young actresses, and simply fashionable students. Unusual ones can be seen in Antonioni’s 1966 photographic Enlargement: two aspiring models — one of which is Jane Birkin — try to seduce a famous photographer while wearing sleeveless dresses and thick, bright tights. The film itself is a true mini-guide on the style of the era, and bright tights are found there more than once. Advertising stockings of the time was also similar to the work of surrealistic art - photos of legs covered with colored caprone, look impressive today.

The fashion for "strange" tights lasted until the 80s. Then they were gradually replaced by leggings, which were worn with huge jackets and voluminous sweaters and dresses. In the 90s, the popularity of crazy pantyhose came to nothing, but even during this period there were exceptions to the rule. For example, the touching and tender image of the heroine from "Buffalo 66": transparent blue tights in tune to the dress-nightie perfectly emphasized the fragility of Christina Ricci's character.

A large-scale comeback fell on the beginning of the 2000s: along with rhinestones and denim suits, fishnet tights returned, which are still wearing pop icons like Beyonce and Rihanna on the stage. In the second half of the 2000s, it was as if the designers decided to give us a complete carte blanche for unusual tights: reds appeared in one of the first Phoebe Faylo collections for Céline, white ones from Maison Margiela and Rodarte, and laced ones from Anna Sui. Most often, bright and textured tights could be seen at shows of Italian brands, which at the DNA level are associated with textile production: Missoni, Marni, Prada, Miu Miu. At the beginning of 2010, the “fly” tights also became popular: TV presenter Alex Chang actively wore them, and fashion bloggers along with her.

What to wear today

Colored tights or patterned tights are in themselves a loud stylistic statement. The safest options - dense muted dark gray, to a point, with a seam and delicate tracery pattern. These can be worn with almost anything, but best of all - with shoes on a flat sole. Unlike simple ones, it is better not to save money on unusual tights: it is much easier to distinguish Simone Rocha tights from the transition options.

Dense colored tights of very bright colors - an option for risky. Jeremy Scott supports him with his example: at the show of his own designer's brand, such tights were styled with baby doll dresses and shiny raincoats. Americans Proenza Schouler this season released tights, about which they say literally everything: at the New York Fashion Week you could see the options in a huge fishnet in combination with chaste skirts below the knee and with tight fitting dresses. At the same time, Richard Chai, a promoter of urban utilitarian clothing, showed gray tights, and the men-Navi sisters of Rodarte, famous for their experiments with hosiery, were laced.

If the examples from the catwalks seem to be inapplicable to real life, be equal to the stylists and fashion editors who also wear colored tights: Giovanna Batalla, Julia Sarr-Jamois and the famous amateur of the bright palette Natalie Juice.

Beware

Modern fashion is able to endure everything except shiny body tights. There is no single rule about bright and textured pantyhose, but here you can make a few points. Openwork, lace tights and tights with a pattern in everyday life best of all are bundled with calm monophonic clothing. You can rely on a combination of several layers and textures in the same image as in the same Rodarte. If we are talking about bright tights - make sure that the colors of clothes and tights do not argue with each other, but, on the contrary, complement and blend harmoniously with each other.

In general, the degree of madness tights depends on the perception. For some, spotted pantyhose or with a seam is already a challenge to itself, and for someone, white pantyhose with a pattern of hearts in the style of Harajuku girls is quite an everyday story. The main thing here is to listen to your feelings: if you doubt your choice, then it is not worth it. The feeling of insecurity is the only thing that unusual tights do not tolerate.
