Terry Denim Faustine Steinmetz

In the weekly heading "New Brand", Wonderzine presents young designers and tells where and how to buy their things. Our heroine this week is Central St. Martins student Faustin Steinmetz, whose collections are based on simple things, manually processed in complex techniques.

Denim - the key material of the nineties, when grunge flourished, so designers who grew up in that era appeal to it every now and then. Take at least Marques' Almeida - the duo sews collections entirely of jeans, which he buries in the ground or tears them up in all ways. After them, a new master of work with denim appeared - Faustin Steinmetz. The Frenchwoman buys ready-made things of different brands - the same Levi's - and customizes them. For example, it creates a shaggy jacket made of jeans and sheepskin and gives terry texture to ordinary jeans. The designer handles each item by hand in more than one day, so there is no talk about mass production and sales in stores around the world. But the jackets and pants Faustine Steinmetz have no analogues. It turns out a good combination of denim - material without age and social restrictions - with almost fancy handmade techniques.

Steinmetz She studied tailor skills in her native Paris, then went on an internship with Jeremy Scott in Los Angeles: she and the team worked on his collection for Adidas. After that, she returned to Europe and got a job with Henrik Vibskov. To enter the Central Saint Martins magistracy, she was forced to go to the famous Colette concept store in Paris. There, Faustin saw a collection of Greek women, Mary Katranza, and, according to her, she still didn’t understand what fabric her clothes were made of - natural or synthetic denim. She wanted to learn how to work with materials. In CSM, the designer painted the coat of plastic with acrylic paint and made analogs of the iconic items of luxury brands from inexpensive fabrics. But the DNA of her brand began to take shape a year ago: she bought a sewing machine, learned how to weave and weave, and began to process ready-made things so that they would have a terry texture. A couple of low-fi photos that went online, did their job - Steinmetz had a studio and interns, and writes Business of Fashion about her things as an excellent handmade sample.

My parents recall with horror my teenage years. I cut all my clothes and wore it over and over. I even made a hole in a pair of Levi's 501 jeans and wore them like a jacket. I hate the whole modern fashion industry. My favorite designer? This question gives me goosebumps. I constantly change my ideas about clothes, and designers who like me are also doing this. But I have one constant: I think there is no less attractive thing than a girl in uncomfortable clothes for her. Women just want to wear pants and feel comfortable. In my opinion, fashion - it is not about some dresses and heels. I am inspired by ordinary people in everyday life and the way they look.
