Men of the Mary Rose: 3D

Today, experts at Swansea University, the Mary Rose Trust and the University of Oxford have launched the Virtual Tudors website with 3D models of skulls and artifacts from the ship Mary Rose that sank almost five hundred years ago. The ship’s remains were discovered in 1971 and raised to the land eleven years later: there were found about 19 thousand Tudor artifacts in good condition and 179 skeletons.

The new site is intended primarily for scientists: in a closed section of the site they can explore ten models of the skulls of the crew members. Each 3D model is based on more than a hundred photographs, so objects can be well considered. The authors of the project hope to find out whether virtual object models can be useful for scientific research.

"Many museums digitize their collections, and the main task here is often to create a digital copy of the exhibit," said Richard Johnston, a materials engineer at Swansea University. "We want to challenge the scientific community and see if it will work with digital models." a serious osteological analysis. Then we will compare the results obtained by scientists from different countries with our own research of the real remains. " If the experiment is successful, and the results of virtual research are accurate, it will open up new perspectives: with the help of this technology, scientists from all over the world will be able to study artifacts and remains without causing them any harm.

But the site will be interesting not only to scientists: in the open access there is a 3D-model of the skull of a carpenter who floated on "Mary Rose", as well as models of several things belonging to him - carpentry tools, shoes, a knife handle and a grinding stone and many others.
