A gift is me: How to wear things with bows and knots today
We are restarting the "trend" rubric, where we talk about new trends from the podium, which can be adapted for your wardrobe. In this issue we understand why decorative bows and knots are at the peak of popularity, and we demonstrate how to wear them in practice.
How it all began
Nodes historically have many sacred meanings associated with the process of binding and unleashing. The knot was a talisman and symbolized infinity as well as immortality in various religions. The bow is essentially a decorative knot, which is used both for decoration and functionally to fasten clothing.
The European aristocracy from the 16th century decorated itself with bows from head to toe, tying them on shoes, heavy dresses on crinolines, gloves, hats, wrists and neck. The bows had their own symbolism. So, the bow fixed on the chest meant that the lady had a gentleman, on the ribbon around her neck she was ready to flirt, the bow on the back of her head indicated that the girl was not interested in communication. With the filing of Louis XIV and the Marquise de Pompadour, the bow became an indispensable element of court fashion. A completely separate story is the bows and knots in Asia: from the shibari rope bandage culture to knowing how to tie an obi belt into kimono, which appeared in the female fashion in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868).
Despite the fact that the bow is associated with something elegant and romantic, it was most actively worn between the First and Second World Wars, and then at the junction of the 60s and 70s. In the 80s, bows became part of women's business style and the answer to men's ties, largely due to the style of the "iron lady" Margaret Thatcher.
How to wear things with bows and knots now
There are brands and designers that traditionally use bows in collections. For example, they are shown by John Galliano, who always loved theatricality. Another example is Meadham Kirchhoff, often referring to the Rococo and the image of Madame Pompadour. The most striking example of the use of bows are the collections of the Dutch Viktor & Rolf. It is enough to recall the collection "Carolina" of the spring-summer 2005 season or their latest "red" couture collection. Rei Kawakubo uses bows and knots in the traditionally Japanese vein, referring to the obi belt and bandage. An example of the latest fashion - the genius of Christopher Kane. During the period of his studies at Saint Martins he made dresses of knots and woven pieces of fabric, referring to bandage photo shoots of the Japanese Nobuyoshi Araki. In the new season, Christopher literally uses knots, decorating with them half of the items from the spring collection, which refers both to the designer’s past and translates the current trend.
In the new collections of 2015, bows resembling Japanese obi are commonly used. They can be seen in collections from A.W.A.K.E. and MM6 Maison Martin Margiela to J.W. Anderson and THE ROW, which, by the way, is a sign of the gradual return of the Asian theme. On the other hand, such a thing as a classic blouse with a bow, referring to the fashion of the 70s and 80s, can be found in a good half of the 2015 women's collections. For example, Jonathan Saunders is decorated with bows jackets, tops, dresses and pants. Chloé combine blouses with bows with boots and flares.
A knot can also be a simple stylistic solution. For example, Christophe Lemaire knit sweaters with knots on the neck like scarves, Ellery and Baja East - coats and jackets - diagonally.
Beware
For many of us, the bow is still something from childhood that the mothers wanted to tie on our heads, and we quietly take it off. In any case, since then we remember: the bow is decorative and festive. Therefore, to wear bows in the evening dress is still appropriate, especially if you try to wear something tricky, for example, an evening dress in the spirit of the dresses of the series "Dynasty". Something similar in the new season shows Jeremy Scott for Moschino, showing how to look today, if you want to look like a gift.
A blouse, skirt or pants with a bow in the daytime variant is best combined with something extremely concise. Here the main thing is balance in combination of such luxurious details as a bow and simple things. A blouse with a bow can be worn in a pair with a trapezoid skirt or even flared trousers, and pants or a skirt with a bow at the waist can be combined with a shirt or top. How beautiful to twist a jacket or sweater with a bow around the dress, we advise you to peep in the spring book of McQ Alexander McQueen. Last and most important: a bow and a knot is always an additional volume. Therefore, girls with forms, and especially owners of large breasts, will probably want to approach this trend with caution.
