How are men with dyed hair - and what they think

The history of hair coloring has more than one thousand years. - surviving recipes, descriptions and images testify to its popularity among ancient peoples: Assyrians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans. Then the hairstyle and hair color had a symbolic meaning, just like the make-up, cut and shade of clothes.

Black was considered a status color in Egypt: as a rule, pharaohs and high-ranking people shaved their heads and wore raven-colored wigs; sometimes reddish and chestnut shades were attached to the strands, and later colored wigs also appeared. Sedin was painted over radically, using a solution of the blood of a buffalo, which, as the Egyptians believed, gives man the strength of an animal. Few people practice magic today, but dyes and hairstyles still remain attributes of subcultures and serve as distinctive features - and, unfortunately, often fall under the outdated stereotypes.

Light colors have a separate bright story. Most of them are dark-haired, the Greeks could well dream of light strands, as evidenced by the presence of several blond gods in the Pantheon - golden curls were associated with purity, innocence and the rays of the sun. The Romans lived in harmony with their dark hair, until they began to actively adopt the Greek culture with its symbolism. When German slaves began to appear in Rome, blond hair immediately turned into a sign of youth, for which they had fought at all times. Another bright twist happened in the 1860s: in France the fashionable fashion for blond hair took shape, and in 1867 a hairdresser from Paris Leon Hugo and a London pharmacist and perfumer by the name of Tillie showed a joint development - hydrogen peroxide for lightening hair. Not too gentle composition is used to this day, and then it became a real revolution and made the desired blond affordable; throughout the twentieth century, it will turn into a real fetish.

Blonde hair easily entered the mainstream thanks to actresses and models and at the same time turned into an exclusively female prerogative - you can recall at least Soviet movie stars Lyubov Orlova and Valentina Serova, whose appearance was corrected after the model of Western divas or heroines “Gentlemen prefer blondes” - Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. And the first who tried the highlighting invented by Jacques Dessange was Brigitte Bardot. Blond was associated with sexuality, belonging to a certain type of woman. And, of course, it quickly spread among those who could afford to pay for the master's neat work: the results of home dyeing with peroxide were still accompanied by overdrying and brittle hair.

For a long time, there were simply no gender restrictions in make-up and hairstyles, but by the beginning of the 20th century the situation had changed enough for men to abandon jewelry, cosmetics, hair coloring and wigs. Together with the disappearance of the estates, the need for a distinctive appearance was also eliminated, therefore the attributes were divided differently. Men got uniforms and business clothes, women moved lipstick, perm and skirts. But in the second half of the 20th century, thanks to the emergence of youth subcultures, the next turn was taking place.

Techniques have changed a bit, new tools have become available, and punks were one of the first to take advantage of it - they dyed their hair in bright colors and in the same way wrote new hair styles (of the same bazkat or hedgehog) into the history of hairdressing. In protest, fans of various musical movements wore long hair and complex hair, did not hide their natural head of hair or shaved their heads - there were many options, and in this environment it was allowed to anyone who wanted to demonstrate solidarity. The most inconceivable acidic shades could be seen on the heads of ravers, who trampled dance floors around the world in the 90s.

Despite the fact that on individual islands of freedom everything was possible, for the rest of the world male staining remained a sign of marginality: in cinema, bright hair was relied solely on rock stars and renegades and occasionally interpreted as an element of the drag image. A harsh condemnation followed naturally - to questions in the spirit of "Can a man dye his hair?" easy to stumble on the internet even in 2018. Interestingly, in the 2000s, the situation was slightly improved by famous footballers. David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo wore highlighting exclusively for decoration, and thanks to them young men, especially teenagers, more easily accepted hair experiments and willingly went to the hairdresser.

The youngest generation is growing up, understanding what is gender fashion and the right to own body, and are not shy about a lot - including unusual clothes, basic cosmetics and hair dye. We asked five men to demonstrate the most fashionable techniques in light coloring and found out how they feel with the new hairstyle.

Never painted hair before - and no longer wants

Doubts before shooting were: I never painted and especially did not want. But they said that they would brighten me a little and it would not be too noticeable. I was satisfied with the color and length - I imagined it would be brighter. Got used immediately; no one even noticed that I painted

Dyed hair for a long time; recently again changed their color from a familiar hairdresser, and after - on this shooting

The first time I painted a long time ago - in Korea. It was very fashionable. Koreans have very dark hair, and many do the coloring to stand out. I recently told my wife that I used to have colored hair, and she asked if I wanted to try again. So I painted again. Opinions of friends and acquaintances were divided fifty to fifty. But I like!

Dyed his hair before that and maybe he will do it again in the future.

When I went to the guys in the salon, I had no idea what the color would be. The result is just super, at home I never did it. All the most turbulent comments about the new hairstyle received when he made her for the first time. I think I will soon shave everything off: I really like the color, but the feeling that with natural hair I look more sexy does not leave me.

I tried many hairstyles and colors, and now sometimes bleaches hair and dyes them in bright shades

I so often come across inadequate comments — not because of the hairstyle, but of the image as a whole — that I have long ceased to react to them. Unexpected compliments are much more memorable, for example, from my wife’s grandparents - I had blue hair then. I am satisfied with the resulting shade: I was ready for any extreme coloring, and in the end I got a beautiful and wearable color that suits me

Did not dye your hair before shooting, but wants to dye it in the future

I was happy to dye my hair - immediately felt fresh. The very thing before the beginning of this spring. Relatives and friends said they quickly got used to my new image. I would like to repeat this experience, but later - now I enjoy the new hairstyle and wait for the hair to grow back
