Russians in London: Masha Mel, photographer
Over the past week, Wonderzine talked about the key moments of London Fashion Week, which is traditionally famous for the shows of avant-garde and young fashion designers. Unsurprisingly, in the development of youth culture, the city can be compared only with New York. London is always visited by guys who want to get the best education in art or fashion and / or join teams that shape the taste of an entire generation, be it Dazed & Confused, Love and i-D magazines or KTZ or Palace clothing brands.
We gathered 6 girls who are currently building a career in the London fashion industry, and asked them about whether it is difficult to survive in one of the most expensive cities, how to get a job in a place where almost the biggest competition in the world is, and whether return to Russia.
I was born in Moscow, She lived there until she was a teenager and then moved to Canada. Since childhood, she was fond of art and theater and went to an art school, then she entered London College of Fashion. I could become an artist, but when you paint, you need a lot of patience for the result, I don’t have that quality. I like my current profession, because I can meet cool people and make interesting projects. Now I work with the stylist Tess Jopp most of the time. We make our own project, Vrag Mag, and restart the site, so stay tuned! If we talk about working with other publications, I really enjoyed taking pictures for Tatler in the London Zoo with giraffes and lemurs. I recently did a project for Marques'Almeida, which will be released soon.
I moved to London from Canada: It seemed to me that this is the best place for young creatives - the city is full of opportunities. Here people never criticize your work: they have a slogan - you never know who you will become tomorrow. I have never worked in Russia, but it seems that there is no platform for beginners, and they pay very little. London is beautiful in its diversity of cultures, and it affects a lot. Many different nations live here, so, for example, you can eat completely different foods, from Indian to Vietnamese, and this will not be a delicacy for a lot of money. There is great shopping here: even if you have a little money, you will find something to your liking, well, you can buy items from the latest collections or designer clothes at sample sales. I love spending time in a pub with friends, sitting by the fireplace with a glass of good beer. Especially in the "Southampton Arms". It is a pity that renting an apartment is expensive, but it is justified: Britain is just a small island. In the future, I would like to have a country house, children and dogs.
