Why a dress code is a relic of the past

Olesya Iva

In everyday life eternal flour "What to wear?" You can allow cleverly - wear what comes to hand. Another thing - fees for a special event, say, a film festival. Here you can’t get off with a blind choice. "What to wear?" becomes an eternal problem, and its solution overnight can turn into a scandal. So, recently in Cannes, the premiere of the film "Carol" did not allow women in shoes without heels, which caused widespread outrage: while the ladies were not even in casual shoes, but in elegant boats. Why are the festival organizers wrong with those who neglected the dress code, and why is the dress code in 2015 a relic of the past?

White tie and black tie, creative black tie, black tie optional, A5 (after five), dressy casual, Bb (business best), casual, informal — an incomplete list of what a dress code can be. However, few people without going to Google on the move will say what each of them means. Best known to this are celebrities and officials who regularly need to attend important events. However, at the American awards ceremonies like the Grammy Awards, it’s already about five years on the red carpet in sneakers and sneakers. True, this is a music prize - and rock stars just give a reason to break the rules. But nevertheless, the recent Cannes case with heels is just an example of old-fashioned and conservativeness, which is trying to maintain its position with all its might.

Society needs norms, and the dress code is one of them. As planned, it guarantees the stability and integrity of the visual picture of the event. However, in the modern world, a hard dress code is contrary to common sense and falls out of the ubiquitous lifestyle with its accelerated pace. Suppose in the morning you go to the gym, then to work, and in the evening - to the opera. Dressing up three times a day is a mockery. Imagine that today you are not allowed only because of jeans and sneakers in a decent restaurant - something beyond the point of absurdity. As well as to spend the whole working day discharged in an evening dress, waiting for a trip to the theater. Carrying a shift as you did in your time is also ridiculous.

Each of us is familiar with the fear of irrelevance and costume discomfort: you never want to be misunderstood, look inappropriate or attract too much attention. Even if we dress for ourselves and insist on personal comfort, we still subconsciously correlate our appearance with the situation in which we find ourselves. The dress code seems to be supposed to save us from the unpleasant feeling that you are a stranger at a party. But there is another catch: you should be out of the event - and now you are out of place again, being dressed up to pieces. Solemn ceremonies are followed by merry parties, where everyone dances until the morning, and the seasons' openings at fashionable city venues - get-togethers at the next bar, and then the predawn burger. Moving on high heels all night, picking up a hemmed sequined hem? That's just funny.

The dress code allows freedom of interpretation, because everyone understands it in their own way. Emily Blunt in Converse sneakers on the red carpet or Lena Lenina on her heels and with the “Tower of Pisa” on her head - which is more of a violation of the Cannes festival, is another question. Or take at least the spectacular outfits of the guests of the annual Met Gala Ball, a fashionable event in the New York Metropolitan Museum with a clear dress code. Dress-pizza or omelette dress Rihanna, Beyoncé in rhinestones, "Kim-sofa" - why not creative black tie? Traditionally, the most modestly dressed stars and those who ignore the dress code at all appear to be the best on Met Gala amid surreal and insane outfits.

There is a lot of freedom today. We used to wear comfortable things and combine the beautiful with the ugly. Hard codes collapse, and the rules of the dress code can not be changed. It turns out, the dress code is good as a recommendation, but not an obligation. If heels are prohibited for health reasons, why should you wear them? Top class - to dress so that it looks appropriate everywhere, no matter at graduation or at the festival. But for this you need good taste, not the rules.
