Trend: Tweed

Tweed - a thick woolen fabric with a nap - began to be used in Britain more than a hundred years ago, but for a long time it was used only for sewing men's suits and coats. And only Gabrielle Chanel in the 20s popularized this fabric for women, having invented the simplest and most convenient classic tweed suit with a fitted jacket and a narrow skirt.

Since then, the Chanel tweed jacket has been modified many times. The only thing that remained the same was the price: as a rule, it still cannot cost less than $ 3,500. Tweed jacket and Chanel are as associative as trench and Burberry, loafers and Gucci, woven bags and Bottega Veneta.

Tweed jackets never came into fashion - simply because they did not leave it. But in recent years, editors of glossy publications like Anna Wintour and Emmanuel Alt, along with celebrities such as Chloe Sevigny, Alex Chung and Zoya Deschanel, have made a real cult out of this thing. And magazines as one offer to combine a tweed jacket with denim shorts and skinny pants.

Their versions of tweed jackets at the FW 2010 shows could be seen in Isabel Marant, Moschino, and even Diesel. As far as designers were inspired by the classic creation of Gabriel Chanel, it is easy to judge: almost all models resemble the original even more than what Karl Lagerfeld is doing now. Today, a tweed jacket can be bought for just over 2,000 rubles at Zara, Marks & Spencer, Topshop and H & M. Those who dream of creation from Chanel have no choice but to look for the cherished thing on the ruins, in vintage stores or on eBay. True, and there the price is unlikely to fall below $ 500.

Natalia Sych, stylist:

Tina Kandelaki told me one funny phrase a few years ago when she was shooting for a glossy magazine: “In a tweed pair of Chanel, just put them in a coffin”. And I agree with her, in principle. Tweed as a material is extremely dull and amorphous, I personally lack plastic in it: you can't put it on a cool stake, and there are no drapes from it. Classic jackets made of this fabric usually look square, like a wardrobe, well, or like the same coffin. Of course, there are young ladies who are painted by the hypertrophied old Persian bourgeois, but I’m not exactly like that.

If we talk about a tweed as a trend, then the story with rugs is much more interesting to me. All fabrics, reminiscent of carpets and tapestries, very cool fit into my favorite now bomzhatskuyu aesthetics. As a stylist, I am interested in working with such things. Well and, of course, I dream about a Rodarte jacket much more than about any creation of Karl.

Svetlana Tanakina, fashion director of the magazine L'Officiel:

In general, I really like tweed jackets, especially if they are a straight silhouette, a bit voluminous and look like a men's jacket. The ideal tweed jacket in my understanding should be a muted or black and white color scheme - a classic tweed salt'n'pepper or herringbone, otherwise it is likely that he will quickly get bored. I haven't got one like this yet, but I saw decent options in the Cyrille Gassiline collection, and Jil Sander's favorite ones.
