Ecosexuals: Who and why has sex with the Earth

"WE HAVE TRUELY TAKING TREES, we mass the earth with our feet, we conduct erotic conversations with plants. We caress the stones, rejoice in the waterfalls and admire the seductive forms of the Earth, "says the eco-sexual manifesto. This inspiring and humorous document was composed by Beth Stevens and Annie Sprinkle, the founders and first popularizers of erotic relationships with nature. In 2008, they dressed themselves and friends into psychedelic homemade costumes and made a wedding with Earth, and then made coming out as ecosexuals - declared themselves mistresses of the Earth and admirers of its erotic power. Since Stevens and Sprinkle have spent one wedding ceremony at the 59th Venice Biennale, the movement has become a meme and has gained many supporters (and opponents). But ecosexuals today are not only eccentrics who go naked and like to wallow in the mud, masturbate with a burdock or “chpokat waterfall.” Although they, of course, too.

Save the Earth by having sex with her

The founders of the movement believe that its main goal is to bring into the ecoactivism a game, joy, entertainment and creativity that are lacking in ordinary environmentalism. Coming up with your films and performances - “Wedding with the Earth”, “Wedding with the Ocean”, “Mud Bed”, “25 Ways to Make Love with the Earth” and others - they are inspired by glam rock, hippie subculture, rituals of various nations and their own rich life experience. Before becoming strong lesbian, and then as an eco-couple, Stevens and Sprinkle managed to make an impressive career in art and academy. In addition, in the 1980s, Annie Sprinkle was a sex worker, starred in porn and became one of the first sex-positive feminists. Women share a love of provocation and circus aesthetics, but explain that any form of eco-sexuality has a right to exist - and for this it is not necessary to have sex with trees. Sex, according to Stevens and Sprinkle, this concept is very abstract: they see sex not only in the penetration of the penis or anything else in the vagina, but also "in how one body of water merges with another or the biome cloud of bacteria of one person with the biome cloud another person".

The main postulate of eco-sexuality according to Stevens and Sprinkle: "Treat the Earth as a mistress, and not as a mother." Mankind is already mired in infantilism, believing that Mother Nature will accept and forgive everything - and this is what we have now, say the artists. The sexual partner will not tolerate such an attitude: if we treat the Earth with insufficient respect and care, it will simply leave us. Impressive cleavage Sprinkles, artificial flowers, frivolous dances and clown performances - all this should really pay attention to serious problems in relations with the Earth. However, the founding mothers say that any manifestations of ecosexuality are good, because the main thing is cleanliness of intentions, criticism of capitalism and the fight against environmental pollution. "In order to be an ecosexual, you don’t have to buy only natural, organic products - the less you buy, the more you ecosexi," say the artists.

Lick a tree and swim without clothes

“You hardly think about it, but when you smell flowers, you enjoy the scent of their genitals,” said Jennifer Reed, a researcher and author of a book on queer ecology. This may sound ridiculous, but in fact many of us have an experience of erotic relationships with nature. For example, many people like to swim in the river or in the sea naked - and agree that it gives a very different feeling than the usual immersion in a swimsuit. “When there are no barriers between the most intimate parts of my body and water, the river can make love to me,” writes eco-sexist and sex-educator Luna Dietrich, who is also Pussy Witch, in her instagram. The blogger says that air baths with a full moon, masturbation in the forest or hugs with trees help her to feel part of nature and confidently embody her sexuality.

In the episode of the "Slutever" show about ecosexuality, Luna Dietrich suggests leading Karlie Skortino to start small - to eat raspberry berry as slowly and consciously as possible, savoring her sweetness, feeling the pimples in her tongue and feeling the energy invested by nature in this fruit. The next stage is “a date with the forest”: Skortino is blindfolded and offers to explore moss, wet earth and tree bark by touch with the help of hands and even tongue. If desired, you can also imitate sexual practice with a natural object: for example, "Grassilingus" - "cunnilingus grass", which the singer Peaches glorified. However, direct physical contact with nature is not necessary: an eco-professional and artist Madison Young says that the moon is “a super-powerful vibrator” and to get a “Lugazm” it is enough just to be naked under the moonlight. Ecosexuals generally believe that you should not dwell on the genitals: ecosexuality researcher Lindsay Hagamen suggests that you perceive your body as a harmonious ecosystem and build friendships with other ecosystems, be it another person, a houseplant or the ocean. "The whole energy of life is erotic energy, we can feel it in every phenomenon of nature," says Hagamen.

Consciously consume and find your ecofetish

The younger generation of artists and activists interprets ecosexuality no less impressively than Stevens and Sprinkle, but in their own way: for example, Australian art duo Pony Express created an immersive space called "Ekoseksuyulyuyu banya", where everyone can "explore the pollination gallery, relax in a post-capitalist sauna or being seduced by a full-time Mistress in a copulation room. " In the "bath" you can also see "fresh ecoporno", visit the compost zone, lie down in the twilight surrounded by plants, breathe mist, put on a moss mask and penetrate the flower with your finger, wearing a special small condom on it.

The spouse Genevieve Belvo and Themba Alleyne offer another interpretation of ecosexuality: they call themselves “ecofetishists” and enter into BDSM relations with nature, using nettle and thistle for flogging, and fruit as a gag. They also make hand-made cute sex devices made from recycled wood and artificial plants, such as an aloe flogger or anal plug succulent. Bellevo notes that her interpretation of BDSM differs from that adopted in pop culture: an activist does not use the words “slave” and “madam”, but represents the participants in the action “escape” and “gardener”.

However, ecosexuality is also a spectrum, and it is not necessary to practice something so radical as to join the movement. Ecosexuals are those for whom the principles of conscious consumption and slow life are important - and they expect the same from potential partners. There is a whole book about how to make your sex life environmentally friendly, its author helps to understand the composition of organic lubricants and eco-friendly condoms, and also advises to buy bedding from recycled materials and have sex in the dark - to save electricity. For a shorter ecosex guide, see Greenpeace.

Hug a birch and poke a yucca

In Russia, it is difficult to find an open ecosexual, this term is rarely used in social networks and more likely in a mocking key (basically this is a recurring joke about an ex-girlfriend - "a log in bed", there are also variations about Bezrukov, with dirty thoughts embracing a birch). On dating sites and in applications about their eco-sexuality, too, no one declares seriously: there are groups in the VKontakte network for dating vegetarians and green lifestyle enthusiasts, but there are far fewer users than on English-language resources like Green Single, Earth Wise or Green Passions.

In principle, this is not surprising: in Russia and the CIS countries, an eco-friendly lifestyle is still more a fad than the rule for everyone, and only congregational residents of large cities sort garbage and moreover buy organic condoms. Until caring for the planet has become a life position, it is difficult to move to the next level and make it part of your sexual identity. It remains to dive into the atmosphere of eco-sexuality with the help of art - for example, at MAMM, there was a performance "Garden" in which "women and flowers spray the vitality of nature." We offer to watch the video recording of the performance and wait for the spring, when the erotic energy of nature closes the key.
