The womanhood project
Womanhood is a project of the Canadian magazine Aye Mag. Its authors Cassandra Kacheiro and Sarah Heaney share a similar life experience: Sarah, who moved to Canada from Algeria as a child, was teased because of her dark skin and curly hair; over Cassandra in childhood mocked because of her weight. So they came up with The Womanhood Project - an online platform where a wide variety of women can freely talk about themselves, their lives and attitudes towards their bodies. The heroines of the project are removed naked in a comfortable environment for them; Cassandra takes pictures, and Sarah interviews and produces the material. In interviews, women talk about complex and taboo topics - about gender and sexuality, mental health, abortions, menstruation, violence, motherhood, stereotypes about appearance and much more. The project involves heroines with very different appearance and life experience. Cassandra and Sarah are hoping that a feminist approach to shooting will gradually change the way women are represented in the media.
Heroines are interviewed in English or French; A new series of shots appears on the site once a week.
