Things with patch pockets: returning functionality

We restart the "trend" rubric.where we talk about new trends from the podium that can be adapted for your wardrobe. In this issue we understand how brands began to decorate patch pockets everything. We also demonstrate how to carry things with pockets in practice.

How it all began

Pockets are a functional piece, conceived to carry things around and go without a bag. In the 18th and 19th centuries, deep pockets accompanied both men's and women's clothes, but with the arrival of neoclassicism and Greek draperies, women's dress lost its hidden pockets. Moreover, among the elite, wearing a dress with pockets was considered something of a petty bourgeois. Huge patch pockets were widely used and are still used in uniforms, working or military: remember Mao's jacket or cargo pants, where countless pockets are due to convenience and vital necessity. The war years of the beginning of the 20th century also influenced women's fashion. So, the house Lucile showed women's suits in military style with huge patch pockets, strongly resembling the officer’s uniform. With the growing popularity of masculine, military style, and safari style, patch pockets could be seen in a female costume from the 1930s to the 1990s. However, unlike the masculine, in the female wardrobe the pockets were assigned a decorative function. For example, to take the same 60s: it’s hard to imagine a safari-style dress with patch pockets that would be crammed with coins and lipstick.

How to wear things with pockets now

However, the times are changing, and the women's wardrobe after the men's wardrobe is transformed into the side of functionality. No one will argue with the fact that roomy pockets are guaranteed to add convenience to clothing. The urgent need for massive pockets today is due at least to the question of where to put the smartphone. For this, English even has the term pocketability. On this characteristic, the manufacturers of gadgets or oriented, or completely forget about it.

Nevertheless, today brands take pocketability into account and show things with rather loose and practical pockets. This season, Marc Jacobs addresses the military theme and decorates with huge patch pockets for jackets and evening dresses, and Marc by Marc Jacobs for overalls. Sacai show military pockets on light dresses. Huge patch pockets can be seen in the collections dedicated to the 70th. For example, Acne Swedes decorate long sleeveless jackets, as well as dresses and jackets. Chanel place deep roomy pockets on dresses, jackets and shirts. The Moscow brand Cap America adorns the pockets of trapezoidal short dresses from the spring-summer collection, and ZDDZ decorates skirts and bombers in the autumn. All this pushes to boldly leave the house without a bag, hiding the phone and credit card in his pocket.

Beware

Patch pockets add volume: make sure your pockets do not distort body proportions. Large patch pockets on the chest or hips should be worn carefully, especially if you have a curvaceous shape. It is better to wear the same skirt or pants with patch pockets with a crop top or a thin turtleneck. Do not forget that military-clothes with pockets can be mixed both with something feminine (like lace) and something sports (such as sneakers), but you should not forget about classics of the genre like rough shoes. Boxy-jacket with patch pockets will suit both wide trousers with boots in men's style, and a pencil skirt, and platform shoes or heels.
