Dances, jokes and dress of discord: Events of the year in pop culture

Dasha Tatarkova

Earlier this year, we tried to predictwhat awaits us in the world of pop culture in 2015 - surprisingly, our assumptions came true on points. In order not to repeat twice, we decided to make a short recap of the most visible world cultural bursts of the year in pictures: from the sketches of Amy Schumer to the Adel "Hello" clip.

Hi Adele

We prefer a new long-awaited album - the last Grimes album - but in the rest of the world Adele rules again. The British singer once again broke all possible records of world sales, and this despite the fact that she essentially refuses to cooperate with streaming companies. After a long absence, Adele is everywhere: she appears in a talk show, her clip for the single "Hello" becomes an object of parodies (seriously, where did she dig out a clamshell phone?), And even American stern fathers love her unconditionally.

Drake's Clip "Hotline Bling"

Drake in some sense personifies the whole year at once. His clip on "Hotline Bling" is the height of self-irony and sincerity. In soft pastel light, as if stepping out for a morning paper in workouts and "timberland", Drake dances like no one is watching. Well, or as if he was dancing alone, making himself coffee. The part of the planet that is not devoid of a sense of humor, with pleasure joins it in real time and on the Internet in the form of a stream of gifs and memes.

New episode of "Star Wars"

"Star Wars" has not yet come out, but many have already tired. The oversupply of thematic advertising, endless fan theories, public discontent and the avalanche of other unnecessary information created such a hyip that even the best film in the world will not be able to stand with it. And how many jokes on the theme of the cruciform light sword entailed the first teaser! It seems that we are already representing the plot, and that we have already formed an opinion on the topic in our head, so that in the end there remains only a feeling of boundless fatigue - and this is all from the film, which formally has more to do with next year than this.

Amy Schumer and her sketch show

About Amy Schumer, we have already said everything we could: here are her wildest sketches, here is a historical parody of "12 angry men," and here she is in a row of colleagues. In addition to her own popular sketch show "Inside Amy Schumer", this year the comedian debuted in the romcom, which she herself wrote. Today, Schumer speaks first and loudest on the most urgent social issues that concern women, and makes it so ridiculous that even a truly indifferent will not pass by. Well, her gargantuan glass in a parody of "Friday Night Lights" has become a meme in itself.

John Snow Schrödinger

John Snow has become the Lord Commander of the Night Watch Schrödinger: until the new season is out, he is both alive and dead. What version we stick to is already clear: it seems that there are more reasons to keep John alive than to kill. In addition, news and rumors about the new season, one way or another revolve around the fact that Snow will stay with us for a long time - Keith Harrington does not even have a haircut. However, when Snow's bastard stuck a knife under the ribs, our hearts also got sick.

Caitlin Jenner on the cover of Vanity Fair

Kardashian-Jenner is the number one star family. Last year, Kim “broke the internet” with the cover of Paper, and in this photo, Kendall became the most popular Instagram photo. However, the achievement of another woman in the family has become much more significant. Caitlin Jenner did not just come out, but did it on the cover of a conservative gloss. For the first time, cover-girlfriend Vanity Fair has become a transgender woman. Whatever other celebrities claim to Caitlin, it’s simply impossible to deny the cultural significance of such a gesture. In the toggle switch, the #MyVanityFairCover campaign instantly gained popularity, within which any transgender woman could put herself on the cover.

Documentary "The Jinx"

HBO set the tone for popular documentary films this year. Before releasing the accusatory film "Going Clear" about saentologists, the company showed the mini-series "The Jinx". The documentary television investigation, in the center of which was billionaire Robert Dörst, caused a tremendous hype, as a result of which the charges against Dörst were resumed, which led to a very real arrest. The world recognition of the creators, however, was not without a fly in the ointment and raised a number of issues related to journalistic and investigative activities. What is happening is still being discussed, and the true crime genre is clearly experiencing a peak of popularity. Everyone follows up on real crime stories from the exciting "Serial" podcast to new shows, like Netflix's "Making a Murderer" about rapist and killer Stephen Avery.

The series "Jessica Jones"

The new Netflix series has just been released, and is already claiming to be the best this year. Many will choose the favorite season “Fargo”, but of the newcomers with “Jessica”, few people can, at least for the effect produced - except that “Mr. Robot” or “Daredevil”. When it was created, the stars came together in such a way that, behind the skilfully executed façade, many important acute social and deeply personal themes interlaced logically.

Game "Life Is Strange"

The best, in our humble opinion, the game of this year may not have become a meme of the scale that the album is Adele, but all fans of video games continue to return to it. The game has been going on for a whole year in series and ended quite recently: we will not spoil it, but it will definitely capture the spirit from the ending. "Life Is Strange" firmly settled in the hyphae in the tumbler, and all because it really is an incomparable story in terms of content and execution: about love, friendship, responsibility and things that no matter how hard we tried are beyond our control.

Mad Max and the Hunger Games

Mad Max, like The Hunger Games, this year made a gender revolution in the world of blockbusters: both of them are primarily stories about prominent women, and not about the world of the future. Furyos and Katniss not only led uprisings against oppressive regimes, but also became symbols of women's independence. They dress up for Halloween, they want to be little girls when they grow up, well, and jokes about how Jennifer Lawrence wants to eat pita, but can not, will not stop soon.

That dress

It is blue-black, get over it.

Restless Rowling

Authority Rowling is untouchable, but sometimes a Twitter lover takes it too far. Since the end of the publication, Rowling has regularly fed grateful fans with new stories and shocking facts about the heroes of their books. Sometimes, I still want to ask her to stop: her works have long been healed by reader’s interpretations. On the other hand, she recently said that Donald Trump is worse than Volan de Mort.

#OscarsSoWhite

Elitism in the film industry, unfortunately, has also become the trend of the year. The outraged #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, the tearful reaction to Viola Davis's great speech at the Emmy, or the excitement about Patricia Arquette speaking is a great illustration. The world rightly refuses to believe that with such a variety of wonderful actors and actresses, the rewards are still given for the most part to white men. The disastrous trend nevertheless helps to consolidate. Although the precedent, like “Selma” on the past “Oscar”, has not yet happened, the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite is gaining popularity again on Twitter - many fear repetition of the story.
