The main events of the year in the beauty industry
We continue to sum up years and remember the most important events in the field of beauty, among them an unexpected choice of the main model Estée Lauder, the amazing transitions of Peter Philips and John Galliano and seven more important incidents.
1
Model: Kendall Jenner
Jenner forced to talk about herself almost all the world's media after the show Marc Jacobs, where she came out in well, very transparent clothes. We did not quite understand why the show was the catalyst for the popularity of one of the numerous daughters of the Kardashian-Jenner family, but let's say. Jenner got into this list not because of him, but due to recent news from the beauty industry: Estée Lauder chose her face for her cosmetics. We are pleasantly surprised at the company's determination (the 19-year-old it girl and the queen of the instagram are not very similar to the previous models of the brand), but it seems to us that Jenner’s youth and popularity will play Estée Lauder only on hand.
2
Castling: Peter Philips
Last year, Phillips left the post of director of makeup Chanel, which he held for five years, without even hinting at a new job. Detailed news about the Belgian makeup artist was not until March of this year - then it became known that now he will work in a similar position with the closest competitor of the former employer, Dior. We do not refuse brands in their originality, but they both work in the same price segment and often produce similar tools and even collections. Although Phillips is known for his ability to create "old-products" (central in every sense of the elements of the cosmetics collections) of heavenly beauty, something like Dior's Lumières Byzantines de Chanel has not yet been noticed, but all make-ups on the catwalks this year were recognizable and simple. beyond praise.
3
Appointment: John Galliano
After all the vicissitudes of life, John Galliano was where he least expected to see him - no, we are not talking about Maison Martin Margiela, but about “L'Etoile”. The appointment of the disgraced designer as creative director of the Russian perfume and cosmetics network was even more unexpected than the transition to Phillips in Dior. In May, sources close to L'Etoile told Kommersant that Galyano, in the framework of cooperation, will promote his own cosmetics line, but since the spring the designer’s own cosmetics have not heard anything about the spirit.
4
Absorption: Estée Lauder
Estée Lauder is expanding not only into the social networks and minds of the youngest users (we mean the contract with Kendall, of course), but also at a more tangible level. In 2014, the company added three niche brands to its already considerable list of brands: Le Labo and Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle perfumery and Rodin Olio Lusso care products, founded by stylist Linda Rodin. Fabrizio Freda, CEO of Estée Lauder, explained this behavior simply: the company keeps its nose in the wind and, as soon as it sees a promising brand, turns to face it. We look forward to how the vectors of all four will change (and change).
5
Figures: Kim and Nicky
In confirmation of the previous paragraph about the diversity of beauty can not fail to mention the part of the body that attracted the most attention this year. Let's make a reservation, we are not thrilled by the fact that Niki Minaj puts such emphasis on his ass, and even the last shooting of Kim made our eyebrows go up, but the fact that figure skaters become heroes of popular culture cannot but affect the public’s perception of beauty . Beyonce, Rihanna, Kim, Iggy, Niki are literally more than many other celebrities, but they are beautiful and satisfied with themselves, which means that the inconsistency with the model standards does not contradict the positive sense of self.
6
Trend: 90s
A year, like any other, falls into dozens and hundreds of important and not-so currents, in the sphere of beauty they can also be distinguished enough. Let us dwell on the trend that is gaining momentum for the 90s and a bit - for the 2000s: hair stuck together, contour of lipstick of a contrasting shade, everything is shiny now looks no less relevant than ten and twenty years ago. At the same time highlighting one, the most beloved trend, we do not devalue others: the peculiarity of the present time (fashion, if you will) is that you can wear and match everything and, if your inner sense fails, it will look timely.
7
Fetish: Lucky Christian Louboutin
We did not expect that nail polish can be turned into such a desirable subject for a wide audience. Christian Louboutin was put on the package and did not lose: faceted bubbles with a sharp top, although they turn the nail coloring process into a test of dexterity, they look monumental and self-confident and therefore attractive. We are silent about the limited bottle of Starlight, studded with rhinestones - no one expected such impudence (we speak with condemnation and admiration at the same time) from the manufacturer of nail polish.
8
Position: Keira Knightley
It is one thing to resent the edited image of yourself after its publication, and another to insist on the absence of retouching while working on it. Keira Knightley did not act once in the first scenario, but she was firm with Interview magazine and agreed to act only if the editors promise not to enlarge or retouch her breasts. The team, fortunately, supported the actress and organized a beautiful shooting, which, according to Knightley, was for her personal protest against retouching. Even after this experiment on itself, the Wonderzine editorial team has little idea of how to see its changed face and body over and over again, so Knightley and Interview can only warmly approve.
9
Fight: Standards
2014 can be safely called the year of otherness, saturated with everything and everyone. In essence, this means that we are increasingly being allowed to be ourselves: the stars oppose excessive retouching, brands choose middle-aged women as their envoys, the face of cosmetics collections are not only Caucasian models, transgender people become models and represent world-famous brands. Weight, gray hair, wrinkles and other features that separate the "ordinary" person from the conditional Blake Lively, are gradually perceived as normal and even desirable phenomena, and not shortcomings that interfere with life and feel beautiful.
10
Age: Maturity
And one more branch of the course on individuality: the age was no longer concealed - at least as zealously as it was done before. We can again recall the advertising of cosmetics with Tilda Swinton, Helen Mirren, Charlotte Rampling, Jessica Lang or the luxurious cover-story of the French magazine M, or the Givenchy advertisement with Julia Roberts and THE ROW - with the already mentioned today Linda Rodin. Needless to say, we are only pleased with the human attitude towards such a natural and inevitable thing as aging, and we wonder why it was impossible to indulge earlier.
