Immodest cardigan: How a button-down jacket has again become the most fashionable

WE CONSIDER THE TRENDS FROM PODIUM, which can be adapted for your wardrobe in the next six months - this time it will be about cardigans. With the return of fashion to the 90s, the button down jackets are also back - today they are worn with might and main by Jeanne Damas, Adenor and other instagram influenza players, while Vogue declares that “cardigans are sexy”. We tell how this thing lost connotations with "grandmother's", "father's", well, or at least preppy-style, and again returned to the ranks of trendy clothes.

How it all began

A cardigan, like many current things like a balaclava, sneaked into our wardrobes from military gear. Sweaters without a collar were named after Count Cardigan: the story says that the general was not important (Count Cardigan lost half of his brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War), but this did not prevent him from becoming a popular man, and cardigans - to get into the mass production. Until the beginning of the 20th century, they were considered purely "male" clothing, but in 1908 the sweater first appeared on the pages of Vogue, and in the 1920s, Coco Chanel drew the attention to cardigans, making them part of their collections - according to legend, they became the prototype of the famous tweed jacket The real boom of cardigans came in the 1950s — they were worn at that time by film stars like Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly — instead of a top or throwing it on evening dresses.

The next peak in popularity of cardigans came in the 1990s - it’s impossible not to feel nostalgic for the popular movie characters like Cameron Diaz in the movie “All is crazy about Mary”, the wardrobe of “Sabrina the little witch” or the heroes of “Killing murders”. Cardigans flashed in the cult "Stupid" - one of kinohity, which today are studying the fashion of that era. Not surprisingly, with the periodic return to the fashion elements of the 1990s, the button-down sweaters also returned.

Why cardigans are back in fashion

In recent seasons, cardigans again began to flash on the shows: at the Gucci show you could see the preppy sweaters in the spirit of those that Coco Chanel created in the last century, as well as more grandee models. Balenciaga decided to “refresh” the cardigan with a trend for logomania, and Alexander Wang in a recent show suggested wearing a buttoned sweater with a simple black turtleneck. Cardigans appeared in the collections of Maison Margiela, Stella McCartney, The Row and Calvin Klein 205W39NYC.

With the growing popularity of vintage aesthetics and brands like Rouje and Musier, those who want to buy a rethought version of an “old-fashioned” cardigan aren’t out of bounds - a bright example is the woolen sweater of the French brand Sézane, which ten thousand people lined up for. However, it’s not necessary to stand in a queue to find the perfect cardigan: thanks to the trend for meaningful consumption, a whole mass of vintage stores appeared in instagram, selling original models from the 1950s and 1960s, in appearance and quality are definitely not inferior to Rouje . How nice that fashion is cyclical.

How to wear it

Most of all, the cardigan looks like an independent top: for example, Jeanne Damas tucks him in jeans like a blouse, like Sophia Loren does the same thing Alex Chang does. The cropped cardigan blends easily with jeans, trousers and high-waisted skirts.

In cool weather, you can follow the example of the brand Alexander Wang and pry a simple turtleneck under the cardigan, or even better - pick up her tone to match (as noted by Man Repeller editor Harling Ross, if you don't want to think about what to wear, just choose a monochrome). Another interesting option is to wear a cardigan with a jumpsuit, as blogger Bettina Looney does. And if you are nostalgic for 1990, you can pry a jacket under a jacket, like in “Clueless” - the modern version of the outfit Sher Horovitz (but already included with a bomber jacket) is demonstrated by fashion consultant Sofia Sanchez de Betak. Stylist Veronica Heilbrunner also reminds you that you should not push the most classic of the sets into the background - a jolly cardigan with a simple T-shirt and jeans.
